Will Ubuntu(Linux) and Cubase SX work??

I'm going to upgrade my hardware soon, and I'm used to using Cubase and am pretty happy with it. Also I have a boatload of PC plug-ins that "fell off the back of a truck", and will cost a fortune to replace, so I'm staying with PC instead of going Mac. Not keen on Vista, however, so was hoping to use Ubuntu as the OS. Anybody using it?? Problems??

Couldn't tell you but don't forget that your plugins may not operate properly with an unsupported os. If you can find yourself a copy of xp it would be worth the buy, i'd stay 100 000 000 000 000 000 miles away from vista that for sure.

As far as I know, Cubase wont work with Ubuntu, but the open source program Ardour for Linux is intended to be a replacement for Pro Tools. I know it has plug-in compatibility, but idk if it works w/ VST plugins for legal reasons. You can always dual-boot your system too; I do this w/ all of my desktops. I use Ubuntu for everything, but I have XP on there as well for a few games (I have a Macbook Pro I use for recording). There's a new release of Ubuntu coming out in a few weeks, too.

So is anyone recording on Linux? I'm thinking of building a system since my wife will be needing her Macbook in the fall and I don't want to spend a small fortune on a high end Mac.

I see Linux mainly supports USB boxes for sound. I'm a programmer and an old timey Unix guy so the OS will be nothing but fun for me.

I use a PC at work (develop software on it actually) so don't bother trying to talk me into that. I like Unix better (and Mac OS which is also Unix).

you could run it on a mac mini and not spend a bunch on the box.

Could do.

I can get a lot more computer for that price though, w/ onboard expansion. I can get 4G ram and a 500G HD, for example.

have at it! the number of good linux recording software packages is paltry... so, you are kind of stuck either buying winders or a mac.... you get a pretty good recording package and all the stuff you need to record right out of the box with the mini... for some guys the like configuring and tweaking and mucking about... I like to record and get it done... everybody got their thing!

Whatever works!

Nobody uses Ardour? I guess this question is to the point then...

keep a diggin'! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardour_%28audio_processor%29)

paltry: small or meager.

Yup. My link is bad; same page.

You're right, it's pretty much Ardour or a couple other things; I get your meaning now. The community seems pretty small as of yet...I guess I'm hoping it'll grow.

Well, I'll sleep on it! Thanks for the feedback!
