What's the deal with string spacing? [Archive]

I'm learning as fast as I can... So "modern" bridges are 2 3/16 inches and "vintage" are 2 1/8, right? When I order a body from USAGC I have to specify (for the drilling, I guess), so my question is, what's the safe choice? Does it really matter, or do I really have to have the exact bridge chosen before I order the body?
