Recording Question

What do I need to interface with my computer if I want to mike my amp and extension cabinet. The other option is the Hot Plate I'm using has a line out so is there a usb or fire wire interface device that will allow me to use one or the other or both. I don't want to break the bank to do this. The mike I have is of the cardioid low impedance variety so I can't just connect it to my sound card. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do not have a mixer, but I have copies of Cakewalk and Audacity waiting in the wings.

You are going to need an interface. Some here might suggest the Toneport

You would also need an XLR to 1/4 inch adapter for the mic. If you go the toneport route you might find you don't even need the amp.

Just guitar for now. I don't think I want to hear myself singing.

There are so many, M-audio have a very wide range, decent quality and as a plus you can also upgrade to m-powered protools if you want that option later as its a very common format to swap files etc

Update. I bought the M-Audio Fast Track USB. It was priced right and it had the features I was looking for. Separate mic input along with a instrument and line input. Using Audacity I got it working just fine but I'm having trouble with their included software (live 6.0.1) for now.

If you are wanting to just record your guitar playing using the MAudio Fast Track USB, and you have Audacity, you DON'T need to worry about getting a handle on live 6.01. That program is NOT a traditional recording software, and I don't think it suits what you are saying you want to do. It's cool in its own way, but different in its basic function than Audacity.

I have a Presonus Firebox but there are a few cheaper and many many more expensive. For $200 + you can get a USB unit. I like firewire better but USB is fine. M-Audio has been mentioned bt there are a dozen or more brands.
