Will, You rock,
I posted this question in the tech forum yesterday and couldn't find any info, so I think if anybody here knows what I'm looking for, it's you.

I'm looking for a detuner for the high e string. I want to tune the high e down to d for slide playing. The standard hipshot lever type looks way large for a high e string.
I saw a photo that you posted in this forum of six detuners in-line, that looked kind of crowded.

One of my old buds filled in at one of my gigs recently and he had a detuner mounted to the shaft of the high e tuner. I asked him what it was and he said he couldn't remember who made it but he sure liked it.
This device was adjusted and controled from the top of tuner shaft (front of headstock). The man who installed this device for my friend is no longer with us, so I was hoping you might be familiar and be able enlighten me.

I just joined this forum, I'm actually a bass player but am going to play some guitar to change up sounds at my duo gigs.

Your solo section on Orange Blossom Special is insane and whenever I introduce a new listener to Will Ray, I crank that one.

From the land of Hipshot, Fingerlakes, NY
thanks , Dave

I'm sure Will will have an idea what you are looking for. Have you checked out Hipshot's extenders?

I'm not really an expert in these kind of tuners, since I seldom use them. The Hipshot Extenders as stated above is a good bet. There's a Scruggs tuner that is made primarily for banjo players, but I've seen some guitarists use them.

But to my knowledge, the Low E detuner on a standard Hipshot will work on the high E, but its close proximity to the B Bender might create a problem.

Sorry I'm not much help.

For slide I use the Schallers and the A and E, they work great

My Hipshot had both G and B benders as well as three toggles. One toggle lowered the low E to D. One lowered the 5th string A to G. The last one lowered the 1st string E to D. Using them all put my guitar into Low G slide tuning. They worked perfectly and did not interfere with each other. Of course you can just use one toggle for Dropped D or two toggles for Double Dropped D tunings. There's no need to put anything on the headstock. I'm sure you could get a Hipshot unit with just a base plate and toggles if you're not interested in the benders.
I just had Bill at Hipshot remove the toggles, leaving just the benders on my current unit. I now have two guitars dedicated just for slide guitar. I plan on purchasing a base plate and axle. I will mount the three toggles and use them to "toggle" back and forth from G tuning to D tuning on a dedicated bottlenecker. Maybe one of my baritones.

Wow - 2 benders and 3 toggles on a single Hipshot! Glad they're all working fine for ya.

The Ray Flacke Telecaster (owned by a TDPRI member) has a Hipshot Detuner on both the high and low E.

Will, It let me play regular 6 string, dobro licks, and bottleneck all in the same song, on the same guitar. Worked flawlessly! Great for playin' songs like Alan Jackson's version of "Mercury Blues" where you needed all three sounds in one song.
Just lowering the first string for semi-G-tuning makes one miss all the cool low-end stuff you can do on slide.

nasonm, thanks for the photo
that really clears up a lot of questions about mounting a hipshot style detuner on the high e string. is that a button shaft extension and what other special mods were made?

thanks

I love my hipshot's on my low E's but I think that for the high E it might be just as easy to take 10 seconds and tune down.

My string drop will work for your lil E. Depending on the guitar, you may have to take your lil E string out of the string tree.

I have several guitars that I put a string drop on all 6 strings for some creative tunings.

Anyway, here's the link. http://www.timarastringbenders.com/dropd.html

If you do want one, let me know so I can donate the profits back to this forum.

Thanks,

"it might be just as easy to take 10 seconds and tune down."
Yeah, but,,,, I can do it in a fraction of a second anytime I wanna! In the middle of a tune, you can't stop and retune.

Tim and Breeze, that,s cool!

It's not exactly what I had seen already but the cool factor is very high.
I think I want one.,
Tim, do you know off-hand if the House of guitars in Rochester, NY is a dealer or can they be had at guitar center?
Not plugging these places, just that sometimes the shipping wait is a strain on my emotional angst.

Still like to know about my original post querry tho just to prove my sanity.

both Keith/Scruggs tuners and a HipShot D-tuner (headstock variety). I tried it using three of the K/S banjo type D-tuners but the ones on the E and A strings were just to close together for quick use during a song. I like the one on the A string for licks using the B-bender and that tuner together, with experimentation you can get some interesting moves. With this setup I can go to open G very quickly and right in the middle of a tune or even use them in the middle of solos. Here's some shots of the headstock (front and back) of my main Tele..............JH in Va.

anybody stll reading this,,,

Tim Wallis' TIMARA String Drop is indeed the device of original querry and has been ordered. Thank's Tim.
At least one person at Sam Ash is aware that they sell them now too.

Helle_man Will, you should check these out. as you can put them all over your head stock and it's not crowded at all.

Tim's inastallation and demonstration vids are both entertaining and enlightening. Most often, simple is best and I believe Tim's string extenders and benders are simple and effective.

Thanks again everyone for input.

I've had several people tell me that when they bought one at Sam Ash and.... the sales staff didn't have a clue as to what it was or did and even a bigger hit to the ol' ego....... Most of them said... who's Tim Wallis? LOL!!!!

Yep, I'm still one of the best kept secrets in the guitar world LMAO.
After 35 years of pickin' and 20 years of inventing guitar toys and still....
"who's Tim Wallis".... Yeah... my ego's very much in check.

Thanks hockey_head and let me know how it works for ya.

.

What would work for me is something simple that works on all 6 strings, like this prototype. But better. And it needs to look stealthy.

Will, I've built and designed 100's (yes 100's lol) of prototypes of stringbending/drop ideas and what you're talking about would be most excellent. I've yet to come up with anything like that that worked for me, but
I'm sure somebody out here could do it.

Maybe we should collaborate someday on a bender/drop idea. Even if we didn't come up with "the next big thing"....
we'd sure have fun pickin' geetars together!
