I'm planning my next build and I'm really keen on a mounting the bridge p/up a la the G.E. Smith tele...What are the best screws to use to do this?

Here, I'd use a #2 by I think 9/16s inch wood screw.

Bill Callaham has them; you can get a few at 28 cents apiece if you intend to order something from him.

I don't remember the last time I saw them elsewhere.

Here's what Fender uses...I don't remember the length...but they are just about like the neck mounting screws (pup to body).....looks more like 1" to me ?

Just be careful you don't go all the way through and out the back!
So, do you think this makes a difference in tone over the stock ashtray? I listened to the GE Smith promo on youtube and wasn't real impressed, though he was playing fairly quietly through a Champ.

GE said the Mod was done not so much for Tone...but to reduce Feedback at very high Stage Volumes.

Axes"R"Us in the UK do some 1" "Pickup in Body" screws that look identical to those in the photo. two day free delivery to Wales (assuming your local postie has recovered from 6-Nations celebrations:wink: ).

Hi There,

I thought GE Smith mounted the pick up with screws to body to get fatter tone. I believe he even says this in the video on You Tube.

I'm also thinking of doing this. I recently picked up a bridge similar to that used on the Andy Summers re-issue which also piqued my interest in trying to mount the bridge pup to the body. Does anyone one know about the ground? I'm sort of new to tinkering with the wiring but remember hearing that the bridge pup is usually grounded through the mounting screws through the bridge plate. How is the GE model grounded?

I believe they ground under the bridge in the same way a fixed bridge Strat would.

I've tried fitting a smith bridge but the pickup (GFS Lil Puncher) doesn't sit properly as it has a whopping big bar magnet under it.

I might bite the bullet and just fit a "proper" single coil and live with the hum :)

A lot of time a good hobby shop will have the small sizes of screws that are used on guitars and effects pedals that hardware stores don't carry. That might save you some postage from mail ordering if you have a shop nearby.
