I'm thinking this is more Marshall oriented than Fender and I would like to hear what others think Peavey was aiming for with this series.

I scored a Classic 30 cab with stock Blue Marauder for electronics services rendered to my guitarist, and have been trawling schematics to see what I want to build into it. The Classic 20 seems to be very strongly influenced by the Marshall 18Watt combo, so I'm strongly tempted to build one or the other :)

Just got an early 90s Classic 50 410 a week ago. I love it.

I've had my Classic 50 410 for a couple of years now. The previous owner used it for gigging a bit, so it's not exactly pristine. But, because it's well broken in, it sounds great.



I run it with just two power tubes. It's still very loud, but it's easier to find a nice tone at a more acceptable volume. And because there's not quite so much clean headroom on half power, it get's a really nice, subtle, natural kind of break up when you crank it up a little more and push it with some P90s.

I mainly use it for clean tones as I have my 5E3 for dirty stuff. Sounds excellent with my Epiphone Casino. I will probably sell it at some point though and get something a bit smaller. I'd love a Deluxe Reverb!

Hi all. I have a Classic 50 Head that I run into a Classic 115E bottom. Instead of the very midrangy speaker that was in it, it's loaded with a Sica Neo 250 watt speaker. I recently bought a Nashville Power tele, and the acoustic tones sound terrible through the tube head as expected. I run those tones into a Behringer 300watt keyboard amp with onboard delay/reverb and maybe chorus. The time bassed effects are from a Line 6 M9, and hopefully soon I will find a Xotic Effects AC plus in the front of the amp.

Yeah, the Classic 20 is not really doing it for me - and it has a Marshall 10" Celestion in it. I'll be CraigsListing it. I'm using, rather, my modded Royal 8 ValveKing. That does it for me.

Can I join up - had this C20 from new, absolutely original. Hardly played as I don't gig anymore, unfortunately it's just too loud for my little house! (Got a little Laney Cub 8 now). It's wasted on me, so I will probably have to sell it.

Question (i'm new to tube amps, you can say it, a noob) .....

I've got a C50 2x12. Way more amp than I need, but a it was a great craigslist trade.

The lead channel is about 1/3 the volume of the clean channel, with all settings at 12 o'clock. This doesn't seem normal. Are the preamp tubes going bad? I was thinking of doing a eurotube JJ replacement kit... if this is the case, I'll place my order tomorrow.

Wish I could help you out. It doesn't sound right to me by your description. On my C30 (at the lower/moderate volumes I use) the clean and dirty channel are about the the same loudness at similar settings (I.e. both on "3" they're similar in volume).

Got an email back from Eurotubes last night. I asked about my lead channel problem and if they knew if any different tubes that would knock the power down a bit.

They have a set of EL84 JJ's they are working on that will be a lower output tube... by about 30%. Supposed to be ready for sale 11/15. That would put my C50 at about 35 watts. Hmmmm. Very intriguing.

I've owned a few amps and I keep coming back to the Peavey classic: I currently own the 100W Head, 30W Head, 30W Combo and I'm looking for a 20W combo. I've never owned a Marshall but I know the sound and I'd say the Peavey classics fall right in between Fender and Marshall. I play my heads through a closed back cabinet with 2 x 12 Reverend All Tone's. I used to own a Crate VC 50 2 X 12 combo. That really had nice PA tube overdrive when cranked which the Peavey's don't seem to have as much as. If you own the Classic 100 or 50 you can play them just as they are. The Peavey classic 30 needs a volume control in the effects loop otherwise it's too noisy at low volumes. Both my Classic 30's have been modified to have presence control and the overdrive channels have been modified as per Steve Ahola's modifications at blueguitar.org. I did not touch the front end or clean channel. I haven't powered up the 100W in years (A whole lot of Amp). When I did use it I only kept 4 EL84's in the PA instead of 8. You can use any of the Peavey classics as a practice amp just turn down the master volume down. I'm not a big fan of the Blue Marvel speaker which is still in my combo but it will be replaced with a Reverend All Tone or Jensen C12.

I'm currently using a Traynor YCV20WR at church, but I'd prefer Peavey classic's over the Traynor YCV20WR. The Peavey Classics have a mid range tone but the YCV20WR has even more midrange. The Reverend speakers add top end sparkle to the amp to give a perfect tone for my needs.
