Bad Sound from Classic 30 @ High Volume

Just bought a used C30 that has been heavily played. It has a lot of scuffs and dings.

Sounded great at low volumes when I tested it but when I took it home and turned it up to 12 it sounded horrible, like a cross between a "shredding" sound and the kind of sound you get from a cheap solid state amp with a 8" speaker that's inadequte for the load. (The sound is seperate and distinct from the pleasing natural overdrive on the C30 clean channel.) I still had the great OD sound and then this "unpleasant break up" would kick in.

So after unsuccessfuly attempting to remove the speaker (I think it's the stock speaker but there is no logo or anything on it anywhere.) from the rear of the unit, (I later learned that you need to first remove the power amp) I got it out by unscrewing the front panel and angling the panel so I could pull the whole panel out of the front of the amp while the speaker was still attached to the panel.

When I removed tha speaker from the front panel I found that there were several punctures around the edge of the speaker. It's possible that I may have caused the punctures while I was trying to remove the speaker from the rear, but I think it's more likely that the punctures were already present before I started my work.

Anyway, I just order a Texas Heat speaker as a replacement and hope that fully corrects the horrible sound I was hearing at high volumes BUT can anyone speculate as to other likely sources of the sound I'm trying to describe? Could it be anything with any of the tubes?

BTW - I have heard what "tube rattle" sounds like and that is not what I was experiencing witht he C30. Also, the bad sound was heard on the clean channel with no OD pedals in the chain so it wasn't a product the "on board" overdrive channel.

I hoping that the speaker swap is a complete remedy. I'm not a tinkerer and I was hoping for a value priced tube amp to compliment my Pro Junior. Not some electronics project that will require an amp tech.

I'm in - I have a Classic 20 that I bought new back in the mid-90s sometime. Haven't played it in awhile, but I think it's time to bring it out again and fire it up. I usually play it through the matching tweed 410e cab that Peavey used to make for the Classic series. It sounds really huge through that. Those cabs are versatile, too, because they're wired for either 16 ohms mono/8 ohms stereo. I also have a 10" Weber speaker that I thought would help the somewhat dark tone of this amp, but I never installed it.

Classic 30 here with the extension 112, had it since the mid 90's, love this amp. Switched the speakers from the cab to the amp and such, only mod I have ever done, except tube changes, although I do think the tube rack needs to happen.

I had C30 but in a moment of insanity, I let it go. Thought it was too loud for "bedroom" playing.

I have another on order, but no place seems to have them in stock right now so I continue to wait. I'm still kicking myself for that.

Oh yeah, Classic 30! Loud enough to get the job done. I like to crank it up and get the tubes nice and hot for the best tone.

I turn my C30 up all the way on the clean channel and plug in a MIJ tele thinline. my friends can't get over the tone and how loud she is for a 30watt with 1X12. When one of my buddies plugs in my jazz box, he goes for a drastically different vibe. jack in drive channel with front end turned way down, post turned all the way up. It's pretty cool. not dirty but it feels very responsive like the guitar might blow up in your hands. how can you beat an amp with so much power, tone and variety?

Went by my local Guitar Center today to check out the 4th of July sales.
Came home with a slightly used near mint Classic 30 for 300bills out the door.

Years ago I had a Classic 50 and really liked it. Now that I do not need tons of volume, the 30 should be fine.

Another Delta Blues fan here. 8 years, and haven't felt the itch to replace it. Does a good job of pretending to be a Vox AC 30 or Plexi when I run my M-Audio black box into it. Just back down on that Bass knob and let the 15" work.

Not so much for heavy shredder stuff, but it does love humbuckers, too. A friend did a ridiculously great version of Zep's "Since I've Been Loving You" through it with a Les Paul Custom...as Borat would say, "Very Nice!"

I don't know how I missed this thread.

My Classic 30 has this current tube compliment. V1-vintage Brimar 12ax7, V2-vintage DuMont 12ax7 (re-labeled GE), V3-vintage RCA 5751. Power tubes are Russian 6p14p-Ep/EI EL84m

Speaker in cab is a Weber ceramic Blue Dog and I have a 2x12 cabinet that I use with it that has a vintage Jensen Alnico pulled from a Wurlitzer organ and a CTS vintage Alnico both 8 ohm wired in series.

I've had my Classic 50 Head for 10 years now. Love it to death. I agree with the JJ Tubes as well. It's no longer my #1 amp, but I'll never get rid of it.

dcooper830, oh, thanks) I try to keep ir simple, but without weak parts.
Tele with two piece body and fender CS nocaster 51 pickups for twang, boss spcae echo delivers nice slapback echo. Phase 90 '74 RI really sweet phaser. And also formula N5 has very nice overdrive. Only thing I need is good not very pricey amp. Today i bought it. And it is tweed covered :)
