Can someone describe the character of the Classic 30? What does it compare to- any of the Fender amps, Marshall, or VOX?

Also, does it do okay at lower volumes such as basement practicing or a not so loud Church band?

I can't answer the first question, other than to say since it's an EL84 amp, it's probably closer to Vox than to Fender. However, I think the 30 has a bit of a sound of its own.

On the second question: I play mine in an upstairs bedroom in a house with a wife and 2 young kids. It sounds fine at low volume. On the rare occasion I get to crank it up, it sounds even better. I'm usually playing with the volume on 2 or 2.5 (out of 12) on the clean channel, and it sounds good to me. On the dirt channel, you can crank the preamp volume and turn down the postamp volume and get a really good dirty sound at bedroom levels.

I think this thread is discriminitory as well. It is not inclusive of Peavey Classic extension speaker cabinets.

Anyhow, I have a Classic 30 with no speaker, reverb, or cabinet, for that matter. It still works, and I use it with one or both of my Classic 412es cabinets. Haven't really been able to crank it, due to housing considerations, though.

Can't wait to try it through the pair Weber 12A150w speakers I ordered for my 5150 Combo. Come to think of it, there's not one of my 7 Peavey amps I'm not going to try through those things...

But this is the Classic thread.

I have a classic 20 that I've had since 1997. It's completely stock. I've thought of changing the speaker out, but it sounds great as is. I can get anything from clean to totally distorted from it.

I've had a Classic 30 and the matching 112E closed-back extension cabinet for about a decade now. I still love it. I've used the PC30 for all kinds of gigs, from country and rock to funk/r&b and jazz. It's still my #1 go-to jazz amp -- I just love that round, tube warmth from the EL84s. Definitely gets that Charlie Christian sound going.

I did put an aftermarket tube guard on the back, its only design flaw IMO. But aside from that, as far as I can tell it's darn near indestructible. I've said for a long time, and I still believe it to be true, that a used Classic 30 is one of the great amp bargains still available. Highly recommended. -- CS

I have a Classic 50 410 with a matching 1x15 extension cabinet. The extension cabinet is the same size as the main amp. I have been using it while my 72 Twin was getting recapped. I really like this amp. I will upload a pick in a little while.

Someone tried pretty hard to destroy the one I have. That's why I got it for just over $100. It still works, though. Sometime when I get a lull in projects, I'll take some pics...

As of Tuesday, I'm (back) in with a C30!

Had one about a year ago and let it go. Been looking for one used locally for a while but it's been hard to find for whatever reason.

Today, I just got an absolutely sick deal on a new one from Music123. Price match thing.

$420 shipped.

Brand new.

Can't wait for next week! I'm actually giddy.

I'm officially back in.

I really missed this amp. Forgot how nice the cleans sound with my strat. I'm digging it. Takes my M13 very well.

I got a Classic 50 years back and liked it, but it ended up staying with my parents when I went to law school about six years back. I still haven't gotten around to picking it up and getting it cleaned up, but I may be able to snag it in a few months.

I just ordered a C30, so I'm pretty thrilled that I can finally join this club, I've been wanting to for quite a while. Now I've got a fully made in the USA setup with my Am. Spec. Tele.

Just made a great CL trade for my Blackheart Handsome Devil 15/112 combo + some cash for a 5 yr old pristine Classic 50 212. I really liked the Blackheart, but needed some more volume and wanted reverb. I'm excited to give it a run tonight.

Classic 20

Recently purchased a Classic 20. It includes JJs in the preamp and Mesa branded in the output. Also, previous owner swapped a 10" Marshall/Celestion G10-F15 speaker into it.

I recently put a 5751 into V1 to make the break up come at a higher gain setting. Of course, that's relative and I haven't really had time to A/B that tube swap for any tone changes but there's no problem with it.

For those of you not familiar with the Classic 20: 2 channel, boost switch, gain and master, TBM tone stack. 16 ohm speaker. No built-in reverb. Headphone jack and speaker out jack.

I'm thinking this is more Marshall oriented than Fender and I would like to hear what others think Peavey was aiming for with this series. Called Peavey and got a replacement Peavey badge for the front. It's a real pleasure calling Peavey and buying stuff over the phone. I also replaced the missing trem bar on an old USA Predator. Everything was so cheap I said to just double the order to make it slightly worth their while.

What a cool company! I'll build a 16 ohm cab someday to augment this. Love playing my SC and HB telecasters through it. Still, keep looking on CL and eBay and am finding all kinds of Peavey amps (some I never heard of) for ridiculous prices .......

I have a classic 50. put some JJ's in the power section and the thing breaths with much more girth and extra volume (not that the 50's need extra volume).

That fan is stock, although mine is quiet - hardly even noticeable. Maybe I'm just used to it.
