What a difference a valve makes

Read lots of posts on the TDPRI regarding valves etc for use in the 5E3 clone.

I got the amp with JJ's 5Y3 and 6V6 valves.

I've enjoyed them immensely but also wanted to try the merits of NOS valves.

So in the amp at the moment are a Haltron 5Y3GT and two RCA 6V6GT valves.

I've been trying to try and find the word that would express what I'm hearing and feeling now.

And that word would be: Spongy.

The driven tones from this amp with my 52 AVRI is simply astounding and as the chap who built it for me said....wind the amp up and learn to use your tels's controls.

What a great piece of advice!

Simply stunning piece of kit!

There's a company here in NZ called Custom Audio Boutique.

No way affiliated unless you regard asking the owner to build you a 5E3

And that's what I did - asked him to build me one.

Just got my 5e3 in a trade for my ac15c1 and I couldn't be more pleased with the tone, my only problem is the speaker in it a eminence red fang is way too loud and I think I am going to replace it with a weber sig12 for now until I have the money for something less sensitive but nicer than the signature series.

I joined the group today.... I think.

The ad said vintage fender amp, 85 watts.. Seemed weird so I bit. Here are the pictures, I'm not sure what I bought but it was only $200 and it works. :-) Any clues?

That old girl looks to be the real thing. This stuff people did to amps to bring them into the "modern" era never ceases to amaze me.

EQ to mimic other gear??

Ricky,

Would you like to share some general comments on what you do here?

I use an Ibanez PQL pedal, a one-band full parametric with fixed freq, fixed Q sliders for bass and treble. +/- 15 dB.

A pickup is a simple RCL network, so the biggest difference from one to the next is the frequency response, and the biggest difference is in the mids. I use bright, vintage style pickups. Best if you have your object pickup/amp handy for A/B comparison. I start with the Q set pretty narrow and a good amount of boost or cut. I sweep the frequency control through the mids to find the center of the range I want to tweak, then adjust the Q and level to suit.

I can get a reasonable humbucker tone out of a set of Fender OV's, and some tasty BF voicing from the 5E3. Obviously, this is imprecise, but I have fun with it.

Mainly, the EQ supplement the tone control on the amp, and it also gives me a way to cut the bass if I'm playing loud and getting some flub.

5e3 w/ Fat Switch

Here is my first 5e3. I took it in on a trade.
Looks too clean for a DIY.. No builder label anywhere. Anybody recognize the builder by the pics?

Classis blue Celestion in the 5E3 Deluxe.
Substitute the V1 12AY7 for a 5751 in V1 and it will give
you that dirty gritty natural overdrive sound.

Had an interesting issue with my 5E3. The rectifier started acting up. Physically moving the tube would get it going again. So I re-tensioned the socket, but it made no difference. Replaced the tube and that fixed it. Weird that it would work in 1 position and moved a tiny bit would not.

I wanted a little reverb so picked up a Hall of Fame and coupled with this amp it's bliss! Still loving it.

Spray some contact cleaner on the pins of the tube, then put the tube in and out of the socket a few times. Let it dry, and see if that fixed the issue. Sometimes just the act if putting the tube in and out a few times without cleaner will work.
