When I finished building my Mission kit and hit that first chord, it was just an incredible joyous moment. Nothing had prepared me for the sound of that cranked tweed deluxe. I played for three hours or so, maybe even the same song for three hours, it sounded so good. Finally, I put it down with my wife threatening to call the paramedics to get the goofy smile off my face.

It's just a blast to play.

Might not be pretty, but I love it. It's ruined me for all other amps.

Ricky,

My Mission kit is on order. Any tips or things to look out for before I start? This is my first build.

I am looking into the Nick Greer Underdog Mod 1 amp

No sound clips anywhere, but the feedback sounds real good

TeleV, PM me anytime you want if something comes up. And don't be reluctant to call Mission if you have a problem. Bruce and Randy are easy to talk to and very supportive of rookie builders.

Here's a tip that Bruce Collins gave me over the phone:

-Use the brass plate as an assembly fixture for the jack and pot wiring. That way, you can work flat on your bench instead of crammed in the chassis.

I would do one thing differently if I built another: I would not run any wiring on the back of the board. There's just too much teardown needed if there's a problem back there. I have no idea if there's a good reason not to do that.

Definitely PM if you have trouble soldering to the brass plate.

Thanks Ricky will do

hmm...for the brass plate grounds maybe I should use my Weller 7200 (75W) soldering gun instead of my Weller 100 (5-40W) soldering iron?

That would do it. The plate really sucks away the heat from the joint. It helps to stay close to a corner or edge as much as possible.

I didn't do this, but I was on the "one last try, then I'll..." when I finally got a good join. I was contemplating drilling a small hole to make a mechanical connection. Otherwise, it's sort of a three-handed operation :).

Me too, me too!

I built myself a Mission 5E3 and it's become one of my all-time favorite amps.
I'm running a pair of NOS Hytron 6V6's, a NOS GE 12AY7, and a new Tung Sol 12AX7 (and an old RCA 5Y3 rectifier).
And it's loaded with an alnico Eminence Red Fang.

My Tele's sound AMAZING through this amp.

The 5E3 is an extremely common amp and a really simple build if you are any good at soldering and understand how to be safe around high voltage electronics I wouldn't hesitate to make it your first project. It is really an amp that every player in the world should have. I don't know anyone who doesn't smile the first time they hear it.

I just ordered one from a local builder. Cosmetically it won't be tweed, but covered with black tolex and equipped with silver 70's Fender grill cloth to match my Pro Reverb. Is that blasbhemy?

I post pictures after two months or so.

It may not look like a 5E3 but the circuit definitely is. It had the same Eminence AL speaker as Scott's but a while back I put a Eminence Black Mountain in it.

I don't think I posted this pic (though the Richter 5E3 is not the star of the photo):
