Im very close to pulling the trigger on a Night Train. I found this topic as I was interested in what the forum thinks of it.
However Im surprised with the lack of owners!

Hey Army, did you do the sparkle yourself or is there some sort of limited run? It looks pretty cool.

Well I'm in, I got my night train last week and gave it a road test over the weekend. I will say first of all that I am impressed by this bad boy. I'm playing a 52 tele hot rod RI and using a Bagend 1x12 cab with it. The tone on this amp is incredible and nice crunch and very responsive. I was concerned that 15w would not be enough in a live situation but this was not a problem as the amp easily cut through the mix even with several guitars playing. A lot of tonal possibilities with this amp though I wish it had a bit more clean headroom. An effects loop would have been a good addition too as it doesn't seem to take to time based effects as well as I'd like. Not that it mattered because it sounded so good when I plugged strait into it.

Night Train here too..

Mine sits upon a 1x12 with a celestion Gold! I am finding that the RC booster works really well with this amp.

I'm in...for now. I rented one at a local shop for a month. It's slightly used, and they wanted $40 less than brand new. They would have to do better than that price, or I would just buy one new. My first impression was that it sounded great with my Les Paul, but the real surprise was how good it made my Tele sound. Now that's some twang ladies and gentlemen! I like the 15 watt mode much better than the 7 watt. Kinda sounded like the amp had a blanket drapped over it on the lower watt setting. It's a pretty great little amp with the kind of clean sounds that I've been lusting after. If I can get them to bring the price down I'll be the proud owner of this particular amp next month. Otherwise I'll need to find a new one somewhere. Now to find a nice reverb pedal to go with it.

Mine should be here tomorrow. I'll use it with a Mesa Boogie 1x12 cabinet loaded with either a Weber 1230A, or a Celestion G12 Century Neo. Won't know till I try them both.

I for one really appreciate how Vox made it relatively easy to get the board in and out of both the Nightrain and my little AC/4. That said, wow! did they ever put the ECC83 close to the input on the AC4. It's so close they house the input in an insulated foil case.
Hopefully that keep the tube socket from melting-LOL! As much as mine's been in the "on" position lately I'll soon find out. Nightrain's got those same small off branded caps a the AC4. Guess that's the only downside to me. Replacing those with what I'd like to put in it is almost impossible without making a new little box on the outside of the chassis like old fenders, which is what I'll end up doing eventually.

Got mine two weeks ago. Put in Mullard reissues and JJ84's just 'cause I like 'em. Stock stuff was ok.

I swapped in a set of JJ EL84's and JAN Phillips 5157's. I liked the way the stock EL84 Sovtek's sounded better than the JJ's, but I left the JAN Phillips in the preamp. They give me a bit less gain, which I like and it still has plenty of chime.

I'm out for now. The shop wouldn't budge on the used price of $570. They sell for $610 new, so I'll wait until I can get a better price.

As much as I like mine, I'm gonna have to let it go to pay off some other stuff coming up. I really like the Voxy chime this thing has, though.

played one last night....it made the tele I was messing with sound WAY better. It was sitting on an Epi VJ cab. So, what makes this amp sound best? 112, 212 412, 115....?

Anybody compare this Vox to a Dr.Z?
The review I read said the tester was getting Brad Paisley twang out of the night train.

Hmm, I need to try this amp out - where are you guys finding them? Guitar Center?

If I don't go with a Dr. Z Remedy @ the first of the year or a build /trade thing doesn't pan out with a smaller builder.........I'll have another of these gems here at HQ......I don't use alot of FX,some verb and some tremolo......little bit of OD. I was really happy with mine......See my cab. of choice, but had fine tones with a 1x12" ......... This head is the go to choice if you have a couple of different cabs........If you are on a budget or just want a good econo. gig rig and don't care to mic. @ larger venues.........hard to beat this head.......Less is more as far as FX and the like.........plug in and play.

The Vox Night Train and a Fender PRO JR. aer great bang for the buck.......yep-larger venues your gonna have to put a mic. in front of them....but your back and easy seteup is very cool.....and makes your night better.

From MF: "The sound is pure VOX. Inside, a pair of EL84 tubes deliver on the tube power promise. Two 12AX7 tubes drive the preamp stage with both power and clarity. This is the same winning tube complement as the classic VOX AC15. "
Talk about a handy size, it's time for me to try one! And, that carryin' case...

I own serial #0000050, and it is an absolute howling beast! I love this little toaster looking devil. and it has really great tone - with every guitar I've played thru it. Am concidering building a Porta-Flex type speaker cab for it, loaded with a Celestian Blue.

That's what Andy at Proguitarshop.com used on the demo of the night train was 2x12 Celestion Alnico Blues.

Of course here is the one with Vintage 30

Must be a question of the cab as well - played the night train yesterday at GC - naturally the less than informed sales man plugged me into a marshall half stack. End result? I wasn't too impressed. I had trouble getting it to really twang - while a guy with a tele and a vox modelling amp across the store sounded great.

As an aside it was loud in the GC - I don't know why I keep going back to that store. I always leave disappointed...

I haven't written the vox off - more the combo with the mashall half AND IN GC. :|

You must have. I tried on the Greenback speaker in Eddie Van Halen 5150 III Which is pretty good speaker. Vintage 30 are good and 2x12 Celestion Alnico Blue.

But when I got my speaker cabinet from Avatar Speakers with Hellatone H30 (Celestion G12H30 70th Anniversary with 15 hours of break in time) I feel in love with it sound I got.

That's funny, the salesman pluged me in to a Mesa 4x12. It sounded o.k. I guess, but it wasn't great. That's why I took it home to try it out. A better speaker does wonders for this amp.
