"Amp Too Heavy" Troll posts

These "amp too heavy for you" troll posts have all been removed and we expect that no one else will start a new one.

I hope that is clear with everyone.

I thought it was a pretty civil discussion...It started out pretty hot, but I think the level-headed TDPRI population kept it very friendly. I think that it was a very good indicator of the character most folks here possess.

Even though the original post was trollish, I think it wound up being a very relevant discussion. Seems a bit unnecessary to remove it, unless it got abusive or angry at the end IMO. I hadn't kept up on the thread since yesterday.

Oh well, that's not my place.

My personal thanks to the mods. Like most, I knew what the post was, but it was still hard not to read the thread and respond in hopes that the OP would mend his ways. I guess kind of like driving by a trainwreck and trying not to look.

This kind of diligence on the part of Paul and the moderators is what keeps this place from turning in to just another, well, you know...

Just my opinion postjob, but the problem was not just with the original poster.

I think the moderators do a great job on this Forum -

my only regret is that I didn't get a chance to "weigh in" on the topic.

Get it?

WEIGH in?

In the "too heavy" threads?

On second thought I think I better step away from the computer put my tie on and go to the office . . . the Mods really do know what's best.

+1 to the mods. As everyone here knows, this board is one of the most fun, useful, friendly, mature, insightful, and helpful places on the web- and about one of our most favorite things to boot: Guitars and Gear!

If they see a thread that, in their opinion, isn't up to the usual standards of the board, I've got no problem with them calling the ball and pulling it. But just for the record, I was an idiot when I was 25 (well, to be completely frank, from about 16 to some point in my 30's- but that's just me), so I don't get too worked up over young opinions. My wife and 3 kids think I'm man enough.

Now, time to go exercise: Hmmm. Which amp should I lift today? (Just Kidding!)

Sort of related:

What do you all define as Trollish behavior? Just baiting others for fun? Does it have to come from an external party?

And what's the appeal? just to incite chaos?

I'm not joking- I want to hear what people think.

I always figured that stating an opinion in a way that insults those who don't agree with that opinion is a pretty good definition of trolling. Or to put it more simply, posting something just to start a fight.

If you think about it, just about any opinion can be expressed in a way that doesn't imply that other opinions are categorically wrong! Those old standbyes "I find that" "One way of doing it is" "I prefer" etc, take the sting out of expressions of opinion. On the other hand, most posts that contain the words "I don't get" "Are you a bunch of" etc (I'm thinking of the recent thread referenced above, and am laughing and shaking my head!) automatically put folks who feel differently on the subject right on the defensive.

Cheers, Tim

Tim,

JMO and what do I know but I think that's one of the most accurate definitions of trolling I ever saw. It's right between the eyes.

To me anyway, it's one of those things that I may or may not be able to define, but I sure know it when I see it.

What really got me about the OP was that even after 4-5 pages of folks mostly disagreeing loudly in one form or another, he used a chance to restate his position a little more amiably to basically restate the original inflammatory message!

As a couple of you have correctly pointed out, everyone (myself included) who took the bait is guilty too. I guess I was weak, I should have known better. But somehow spending a good part of Wednesday in the basement with my "71 SFTR and then spending Thursday at my spinal surgeon's office making preps for the inevitable, I don't know, I personally just couldn't let it go. I normally try to look at a post before I hit the send button and think "how will this impact those who read it".

Everybody knows we're playing Telecasters because we're not men enough to carry Les Pauls.

If it was the tank post, I thought it was innocent fun... I had a good laugh.

Guitar players are insanely opinionated (myself very much included), so we sometimes argue myopically about completely unimportant things.

It really wasn't a big deal, but we can escalate things easily when talking about guitar stuff - we need to take ourselves less seriously sometimes :)

Very true. And probably the weight of our amps, too.

I still say i was not trolling and that it was a valid post that brought about a great many views... i just might not have gone about it in the most dilplomatic of ways. It was not my intent to offend, but i apologize to anyone who i did offend. I think though, that this could bring up an interesting thread subject on gigging over and under 30 years of age, volume levels and emotion vs pure performance. that could be a hottly contested thread, so i'll let the mods decide if they'll let me post on that one.

What amp too heavy trolls? Did I miss something? I don't recall seeing any trolls or heated discussions.

When I was young, and PAs were too primitive or too huge compared to what is on the market now, we all used heavy amps (Twins, etc) and played loudernhell. We were young and moving a Twin was no big deal, and 'blasting out' was fun. However..... those days are over. Today, this old feller and all my friends play at much lower volumes and use smaller amps. I have a Twin w/JBLs still but dread moving it. I suspect most other older guys here would basically agree.

I hope that didn't violate any rules.

I for one followed the proceedings for about the first full page of responses, then I was away from a computer for a couple (blissful) days and when I got back it was gone.

It did give me a lot to think about, though, and probably put the brakes on an impulsive amp purchase I was about to make....

For once, the discussion took away all my GAS, and incidentally helped me put my $$ where it belonged- in this case, a much needed exhaust system for my ol' faithful pickup truck.

We don't do "hottly contested threads" here thats frustrating to some people but thats what makes this forum what it is a friendly place for friendly discussion....
