amp smoking

We have a little battle of the bands going on at work. There is a permanent community 'band' area with a small assortment of equipment donated or left there by the owners for work play.

I went there to practice with my rag tag cobbled band of co-workers and found the amp I usually play through was gone. In its place was a tattered, well used twin. I turn it on, let it warm up and start playing. After about 5 minutes, my sound cuts out, the jewel light is blinking on and off then it just goes out. 30 seconds later, smoke starts coming out of the top right corner. Obviously I shut it all down, unplug, etc...

So amp guys, what happened here? Cap or something go bad?

Probably a tube went bad taking some screen resistors with it.

Could this also be a power transformer? I've had that happen to a couple of Champs over the years.

Power transformers usually stink like hell when they go, my bet would be tube/resistors.

Amps run on smoke. When the smoke gets out the amp stops working.
