Amp Isolation during performing-Lessons learned
I perform regularly in a medium venue (about 1000) per set. In the past the sound man and I had discussed the possibility of isolating my Music Man 112 Sixty Five in another room off stage and mic-ing it. It was a fleeting coversation, really.
On Saturday when I showed up for band practice/sound check before playing the night's sets, he had already run the cables for the amp isolation concept. We set the amp up in at the base of a stairway leading to an upper loft over the stage. We closed off the stairway by putting a 5' high carpeted stage prop "wall" between the amp and the stairway. He mic-ed it with a SM-57. We cranked it medium hot Vol=6/Master 7. All I used was a Franklin modded SD-1 to kick it a little and Oh, my what glorious tones from my 60th anniversary (sunburst) Tele into that MM! I have my own tones/sound but it is a mix of blues/classic rock/rockabilly/hybrid picking. 8 piece band plus 3 vocals. Cable length was about 18'. He said it was the best sound he'd gotten out of an electric guitar there and we will do it again every time in the future, if I was agreeable to it. It was a little weird at first not having my amp behind me as a source of what of I was picking, but in no time I got used to just hearing myself through my monitor. Do any of you have similar experiences you would be willing to share or that I could borrow from to improve my set up?
