Some unexpected observations...

A real Mary Kaye strat through a Peavey Delta Blues

A '69 thinline reissue tele through a Princeton Chorus

My friend's '75 telecaster through my '63 Guild 66-J
(excusing the BBC broadcast when used in my living room!)

These are standouts in my mind, strange as they may appear.

A little tube gibson amp that I put a lpb1 power booster in front of---turned everything up to 10---and about 30 minutes before it melted the most incredible sound I have ever heard came from that little guy---then---it burnt up and was gone----never before and never since have i heard such a tone-----sigh--------------JIMO

1) My blackface Pro Reverb, clean, with a little reverb dialed in. Never heard another Pro sound like it.

2) Epiphone Galaxie 10... sometimes. It's soooooo bright. With the right guitar, and the right distortion/overdrive, it just snarls.

3) Blues Deluxe Reissue. The tone mixes perfectly with a band.

4) The first AC30 I heard. Some old used thing, at GC one day. Plugged in and thought, "What a bunch of HYPE. People don't know what they're TALKING about." About 90 seconds into it, strange things started to happen in my brain. Pure bliss. It became, "Oh, NOW I know what a guitar is supposed to sound like..."

I'm lucky because I have a few great amps. I'm currently using a Goodsell Super 17 and I love it. Check them out. But I always go back to my 68 Princeton(in the avatar) to reference good tone.

I've had or still have most every boutique or worthwhile production amp on the planet. These "Bad Boys" for that class "A" thing, are, well.. Matchless!! These firebreathers run "wideband" with no negative feedback whatsoever. They are Sampson era SC/30's, stereo matched pair w/consecutive serial #'s. The cabs are standard SC/30's with baffles custom cut by Matchless for EVM 15L's (note the smaller Matchless badge, and smaller upholstered burgandy grill strip). The 12' celestions they usually come with, have their own breakup points, and at 15/30 watts, the EVM-15L does not. Pure amp breakup, gobs of the correct order of harmonics, without speaker interference. The sonic imprint is off the wall!!

Howdy,

For clean tones, my red-knob Fender Super 112 (basically a Super 60 with a "notch" filter, whatever that is!) sounds wonderfully trasnparent with any of my Teles or Rickenbackers. Huge sustain and tons of headroom. Not so good with my ES-335 though. What an under-rated amp!
A close second was a '65 Super Reverb I jammed on with my old Strat at a Blues Jam many years ago. Sweet; if only I'd have brought my Casino and actually overdriven that rascal.

A 64 Dual Showman head through a Scorpion loaded Peavey 2 x 12 cabinet.
I bought the head for $80, someone had spray painted it black which was wearing off to show the true blonde tolex underneath, it looked like somthing from a Mad Max movie.

of all my amps, my 1967 bassman head through peavey 412 celestion cab is bliss. then the twin is also bliss. the blues jr has it's good moments too. with all my amps, i notice a difference in their sound with respect to temperature and humidity.

I know a guy that was playing an ESP Vintage Plus through a 69-70 pro reverb I thought that sounded fantastic. Later he replaced the pro reverb with a Victorilux, listening to that combo made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
He's also a great player, I am sure that helps.

1a. Late 50's Vox AC30/4 in fawn all original, with a Les Paul and also a 53 Esquire, WHAT A SOUND!!!!

1b. 1960 Bassman - recovered in black tolex, this thing was my measuring stick for YEARS! The first truly phenomenal tone I ever heard. With a Les Paul it was like hearing a young Billy Gibbons. This was my intro to tweed tone, I chased it for years, until I found my Victoria 35310, I'm about 97% there with that amp and the same Les Paul.

2. Victoria 35310 - the most pleasing experience I've ever had with a new amp, this is my number 1 amp for big shows.

3. 1959 Deluxe - WOW, great cleans, fat, chewy gritty tones, and then a wonderful compressed lead tone. When I hooked up to a Fender reverb tank it was pure West Coast tone.

4. 1960 Champ - this was the sound of "Tush"

5. Victoria Double Deluxe - Just a stunner of an amp. This is my number 1 club amp, and pretty much my overall #1, its always warm and fat sounding. Consistent from one gig to the next, and has the best overdriven tones I've ever heard. So many great shades of dirt. This is really my go to amp for recording, or important shows.
