but to be honest reading this thread what i get is this:

you did in fact get what you paid for. the dispute seems to be that you thought you were getting "JAN" sylvanias. when you got sylvanias you felt cheated. it's since been explained to you by someone here that "JAN" is a generic term for "joint army navy" and could very reasonably be applied to your tubes.

what's more, they work and you like them. to be honest i'm not sure what the problem is.

again, not defending the guy, if you say he treated you like an a-hole then fair enough. just saying if it was me i'd walk away and enjoy my tubes.

al.
I dont read it the same way you do I guess Capn'.
I guess you really have to know as anyone that has ever been in the U.S military knows (myself for 6 years as a submariner) that The U.S. Military doesnt take generic ANYTHING (food excepted). If its milspec, its guaranteed to be the best they could get for specific reasons and double verified as such. Thats why a hammer or toilet seat used on a navy ship costs ten times as much as it should. Also one of the specifications to every milspec item is that it is plainly and indelibly marked on the item as such so as not to be confused with a lesser item (toilet seats too). Hence, all milspec tubes will be marked as such and also the boxes they came in. And the carton and the case, etc, etc.

JAN does Stand for Joint Army Navy, a specific prefix, not a generic term. No slight on him but thats about as close as 6X47 really is in his asessment. Before JAN it was JG. The British have the same requirements. I think those prefixes are CHS, CVU, CRC.

Even standard Heavy duty tubes are marked with a suffix W or Y. The ones I got were a result of me falling for his planned deception because he knows JAN tubes are worth more than standards.
I admit that.
And all Ive been doing since my initial post is to answer questions and reply to others.

One thing is for sure, I certainly did not get what I paid for.

I paid $27 each for old tech, standard tubes meant to power stationary houshold items. I thought I was paying $27 each for old tech, Heavy duty, tight tolerance, low microphonic, vibration resistant tubes meant to power radio sets on battle equipment.

As far as using them goes, I dont think I want to shake them apart in my large combo since they cost me so much. These sound good as they are but being old standards, I bet theyre not up to the vibration of an AC30. Ive put them up for sale and I think I'll get some modern JJ's to take their place.
I'll take the loss but theyre probably better suited to a small combo or head unit.

My bad. I read the pricing wrong. Also discovered the shipping at Doug's is a bit less than the Tube Store's, too. And I agree it's good to deal w/ a nice guy who has a good rep. So looks like I've found a tube vendor. Thanks!

Hmmm...

The photos are not clear enough to be positive, but those tubes look like they're likely the same type. The boxes are definitely different, but I wouldn't get worked up over that.

Experientially, I can tell you that I have tried literally hundreds of examples of JAN and non-JAN labeled tubes, and if they're the same construction, there is not a sonic difference. JAN or no JAN, they will perform the same - there's no magic in those three letters. Sorry to be the one to break it to you.

Perhaps the seller was on a different semantic angle than you, and knows that he sent you the same type tubes. Either way, next time, I do recommend buying from a dealer. I've bought seven pairs of Sylvania 6BQ5 tubes from Doug's Tubes - for about the same price as your auction, and I've had nothing but the most friendly and professional service.

If you want to play with eBay, research really helps you avoid quite a bit of trouble.
