B-52 AT 112 or 212 - Sounds great?

I was over at guitar players videos site and saw a shootout among a B-52 AT112 vs. Randall, Fender, Carvin etc. The player was using a Telecaster.

To my surprise the B-52 had a really nice clean tone and clearly was the best of the bunch. Very tubey, rounded and chimey sounding. It was not harsh and bitey in the highs like the Fender or dark and woody like the Carvin. I had not given B-52 much thought figuring it was a cheaply made Chinese import or something.

I have been listening to many amps and was considering boutique clones or Matchless clones.

The gain channel on the B-52 sounds like an issue for me. It seems it was modeled for high gain rectifier types looking for lots of crunch for not lots of cash. Maybe I can find a nice mellow tube pedal?

Can anyone report back on what I am hearing from this amp? Any opinions or experiences?
