Just got a used DRRI used in mint condition. AMAZING amp and I know it can only get better with some mods.
I clipped the bright cap right away and it does make it more accepting of OD pedals and less harsh/fizzy at low/medium volumes (I know that when cranked the cap is disengaged or something but for all the aptartment playing, I had to get rid of that fizziness). I'll admit its not 100% gone, but afterall, there are many other differences with that circuit, no? Also, I'll admit, it was a tradeoff, as now I feel like it lacks some of the nice highs (not the harsh ones associated with the cap) associated with channel 1. It sounds just a bit sterile (dont get me wrong, its still awesome and probably amazing at club levels-im heading out tonight and will let you know). Weird question. I left the bright cap in, just clipped one end. For some reason the treble pot seems to be reversed now (10=no treble, 1=max treble). The knob is on right I think. Am I missing something here. I was trying to dial back in some nice highs but its just annoying as I sware the pot direction is reversed. How could this have happened. I tried some other tweaks...took out V1 but it made it a little flabby...perhaps would be fine at high vol, but couldnt test it....i put it back in. Tried a 12AX7 and again thought it was too gainy...i still like/want the amazing Fender sparkle that this amp has to offer...we'll see though...it may have a place at higher volumes... My amp has an stock eminence. Is this speaker better than what they are putting in now? I still feel channel one is the ultimate tone and wish it had the reverb/trem...we'll see...im gonna crank channel 2 tonight....yeahhhhhhh!!!!!!! |

Gigged with that sucker last night. Mind you, I am transitioning from a HRD 210, but the DRRI was amazing. I am not that experienced at gigging and playing at high volumes and obvioulsy there are so many more factors esp. when you have pedals, etc. Just managing all your levels is a challenge, making sure you are cutting through the mix, etc. For rhythm, the channel two was great...the reverb is awesome. A little extra sparkle may have been nice without my pedal going (full drive 2), but I think it did very nicely during solos with high gain (remember, I clipped the bright cap). I feel like there may have been a point though where the amp was at 8-10 channel 2 and I was flabbing out. I felt like i had the setting perfect earlier in the night and all of a sudden I thought i blew my speaker or something. I must have just had the amp on 10 and my volume all the way up which didn't produce a smooth overdriven sound. Just wondering if this was because the bright cap was gone or what. Probably not though because I thought the cap isn't in effect at higher volumes. Does it effect the overall circuit in any other way other than reducing brightness at midrange volumes?
