Curious

This is supposed to be a Traynor cab, but I can't find anything like it anywhere on the web. Anyone know what this is? What's in this thing?
(sounds real good tho'!)

Thanks again.

I'm curious, too... it looks kind of Traynory (Traynorish?...Traynorific?....)

I have a speaker that looks very similar to the one in your photo. I can't remember exactly where I got it, but I'm sure I salvaged it out of something that was NOT a guitar amp.

It sounds real good in my old Deluxe.

Are there any number codes printed on the rim of your speaker?

Well, it sounds pretty 'Traynorific" for sure
Nothing on the rim but on the magnet it says "7393" and "dgf2". Other than that there is a complete lack of markings anywhere. You're right about not being a guitar cab. It's an open back and I think the guitar cabs were all closed (?)
Maybe a PA or something?

This is really starting to bug the hell outta me. I can't find anything similar on the web. What ARE those speakers? Damn things have precious little markings on 'em.

Anybody? Anything?

It is definitely Traynor and as such would typically be fiited with Marsland speakers, but some got Norelco.

Thanks Tim
That's what I thought too at first, but those big square magnets don't look like any marslands or norelcos I could find. As JHundt mentioned above, it's probably not a guitar cabinet. Hmmmm

Actually Marshman, "Traynor-esque" is pretty much it. Tim, you were right about the Marslands. Below is a copy of an e-mail I recieved from a Traynor rep regarding this cab.

"Hi Stephen. I'm afraid we're stumped. It's definitely not something that ever went into production here, nor does it make much sense from a design standpoint with that huge opening in the back combined with what appears to be large porting shelves top and bottom - that would make no sense at all. Also, the combination of black-and-chrome edge bumpering and screw-on back panels doesn't belong there - we went to glue-on backs and the edge bumpering on all speaker cabs in 1970. If we actually made this, it must have been a one-off for somebody or a prototype. But staring in the late 1970s or early 80s, all our parts went into a catalogue - leatherette, grill cloth (which I notice is black not silver-grey in the picture) the press-fit handle bars, etc, etc., so Traynor-looking things did appear from time to time. One consensus we did come to is that the speakers appear to be Marslands.
Sorry we can't tell you more."

What I'm wondering is what did he mean when he said "from a design standpoint with that huge opening in the back combined with what appears to be large porting shelves top and bottom - that would make no sense at all."?

Since I'm pretty much stuck with it, what could I do to make it more accoustically consistent with a guitar cab, like adding a back or partial back? (I'm a 'plug 'n play' type of guy so I'm in unfamiliar territory here, but I wanna learn.)

Thanks

I'm not sure what makes it not usable as a guitar cab as is. Some people prefer closed back, some prefer open back. I say try it and let us know what goes on. Check the impedance, match it up to an amp and give it a go.
I personally think that open back is more useful in small venues.

I'm sorta looking at other open-back cabs to try and see where these porting shelves he speaks of are supposed to be......perhaps I can re-arrange them.
Right now, I'm using it with a modified 70's YBA-1 Bassmaster here in my 'office' at home and it sounds pretty good at this volume IMHO. Can't wait to try it at 'drummer volume'

The back of the baffle from inside looks just like the inside of my Traynor from 71, wood grain and finish etc. Its a stock cab that has been modified or cut down I assume. The grille cloth is also not original.

Edit: If it were me, I would cut it down further and make it semi-open back.
closed backs can be very hit or miss without experience or knowledge of the air volume etc.
Closed cabs are also more directional, I would also not keep it that deep.

why change it, does it sound bad or is it simply too big 'n heavy?

personally, I like it as is!

Well, it DOES sound pretty good right now but I got to thinking about what that fellow from Traynor told me about it not making "much sense from a design standpoint". I'm pretty clueless about these things so I'm just wondering then, what WOULD make sense?
