Are bass speakers and guitar speakers interchangeable?

I need to replace a bad speaker in a PV extension cab for bass. Are guitar and bass speakers essentially the same thing? Can someone make a suggestion? They are 10", 4 ohm speakers, 2 of 'em.

Thanks, Adam

I have heard that bass speakers are very inefficient...

To get frequency response down to the lowest frequencies, there is some trade-off for power and headroom. So a speaker with a cutoff down in the "low B" range will typically be less efficient than it's couterpart for guitar. And of course it takes a ton of power to amplify bass for this reason.

So a bass speaker would probably be great for guitar but not vice versa.

I'll say this...

...I have blown guitar speakers playing bass through a guitar amp..but never a bass amp speaker using a six string..

Bass - Guitar Speakers

You will likely blow a guitar speaker playing bass through it. You can play guitar through a bass speaker if you don't mind sounding like doo - doo.

So I gather that's a "no"...

Then to whom/where should I look for bass speakers?

Eminence

I think some bass cab manufacturers use Eminence 10's. Or, you could order 2 10's from SWR or another of the bass cabinet makers, but you'll pay through the nose.

Bass speakers are for bass

The waveform of a low bass note is very big physically. A bass speaker has a longer excursion (throw) than a guitar speaker to reproduce the notes. Typically a bass cone travel is about 1/4" whereas a guitar speaker only moves 1/8' max. This is what kills a guitar speaker used for bass.

Dave at Avatar can get you good prices on Eminence bass speakers - or Celestion if they make them, though I haven't bothered to check.

You can probably also buy cheapish Peavey bass speakers from Musician's Friend.
