Are SF Super Reverbs really this cheap?

This looks like a nice amp from a reputable seller, and it didnt' make reserve at only $520!

Hell, I was thinking about bidding $550 just for giggles but just assumed it'd hit eight or nine hundred and I'm still in the "gee, which amp do I REALLY want" phase... but if I knew it was going to bottom out at $520, I'd have bid $600.

Am I missing something or are these amps REALLY going for five to six hundred? If so, I'm getting the next clean one I see!

I was watching this one 'cause I'm looking for a Super Reverb. You can see this one does not have the original AlNiCo speakers. I'm no expert but that's going to devalue this one a bit. I'm leaning toward a Reissue, though tinkering with a PTP version might be fun.

When it has not met reserve the price is meaningless...

I bought a pretty nice '72 SR off HC for $700. Did the obligatory service, sold the OEM AlNiCo speakres for $300, and put in some Jenden RI Ceramics.

In the end, I reckon I had ~$600 in the amp (Including a pair of RCA 6L6's) ...and I thought that was an excellent deal.

That sounds like what i'd like to do. I dont' care about the "vintageness", just the "tonedness". Sounds like you got a nice deal, I'm going to start watching.

Mike is right, the reserve might've been $ 800, $ 850, who knows.

Kinda heavy for me to handle these days.

I love Supers, but there are 2 things I gotta know up front, or it ain't worth the money:

1. Condition of the speakers

2. I HAVE to see inside the chassis

4 decent 10s = $$$. Even if the ones in it are in good shape, they may not cut it for the individual who bought it. Then you are looking at 4X$70+ typically, minus any bucks you can get if you sell the ones that were in it...

DRs, TRs, and SRs have to be the most hacked up amps I've come across. It's unendingly amazing to see all the perversions of "circuit improvements" I've seen. It's also convinced me that there should be some kind of liscense required before someone can own and operate a soldering iron...

A friend of mine has one of the best SRs I've ever heard - a '67. When he got it, the speakers were shot, the filter caps were bad, the power tubes were mismatched, someone had installed a SS rectifier, and some hinky stuff was done on the board and with a few of the pots - odd cap and resistor choices. In other words, a real diamond in the rough. After parts and labor, the amp is now around $1800 - a bargain considering just how good it sounds, but don't be fooled by these eBay deals that are 800 and under.

Good advice, thanks!

I knew a Doctor about 10 years ago that was a serious collector, particularly Fender Blackface amps. He had a couple of 65 Supers that looked brand new, very nice. Back to topic.........
