6G2 Princeton is Mine!

I have regretted selling the '62 Brown Princeton I had for the past couple of years and then stumbled upon a nice deal online for a cool transitional "blackface" 6G2 Princeton yesterday...

I think these amps are the bee's knees, so to speak...nice in between tweed tone and BF tone...bell-like but still has that nice tweed mid-range, throaty sound.

As a bonus the Princeton is also equipped with a nice Weber 10f125!

For stage purposes I'm going to be looking out for a nice "12 extension cab as well...anyone have any good recommendations for one in particular?

I'll post some pics of the 6G2 and the NoCaster when the amp arrives next week.

Congrats on finding a nice amp. I just bought an Epiphone ext.cab for $130 new.It has a 70w 1x12 Eminance Lady Luck Spkr. I'm still breaking mine in but it keeps sounding better everytime I play it.Nice looking if ya want a vintage look. 16 ohm impedance though.

8 ohms on the Princeton.

The 6G2 is an awesome circuit, nothing like a tweed - but the sounds is gets can be just like you described.

For the 12" extension, I'd recommend a Jensen P12Q, or better yet a P12N. AlNiCo Jensens always sound great :)

I was thinking of doing an alnico since it is already equipped with a ceramic...then I could have the best of both worlds.

Can't wait to mess around with that killer vibrato!

How or why is a 6g2 not "nothing like" like a tweed?

I am not saying it is but it must be somewhat close.

The 6g2 circuit is so much the same as the tweed vibrolux

It is indeed similar to a tweed Vibrolux.

When most folks say there is a "tweed" or a "blackface" sound, they are referring to a certain characteristic... not just what skin its got on.

A tweed covered Bassman isn't very "tweed" sounding to me... whereas a tweed Vibrolux or a Brown Prince gets closer. Why? Long tailed phase inverter, fixed bias, and some other items.

A cathode biased, split load PI, low watt has that nasty tweed grunt... a fixed bias, long tailed PI has more of a tightness to it.

"Tweed" indicates a more primitive circuit with less efficiency in the power section and PI. Comparing a Brown Prince with a Tweed Prince is like apples and oranges, whereas comparing a Brown Prine to a Tweed Vibrolux is much closer.

I guess its all just semantics... and either statement can be very true.

I would compare the brown prince to the tweed vibrolux because of each having two 6v6s running in AB. I would not compare the brown prince to the tweed prince because of it being 6v6 in class A.

You were kind of stepping on my toes because my 6g2 is my tweed amp or the closest thing to it.

I know the circuits are similar but do not know if they break up the same. I have tried several tweeds and the 6g2 does have its own BAD tone

I don't doubt it. Them brown era amps kicked a lot of @$$.

Sorry, I didn't mean to step on your toes... and I'd bet your amp sounds killer!!

Some folks say a tweed Bassman is "the tweed sound." Others say it's circuits like the 5E3 Deluxe. Same clothing, same era, different design and sounds... so tweed can mean a lot of things to a lot of people and it'd ALL be correct :)

What speaker do you have in your 6G2?

My next build is going to be either a 6G2 or a Z-28.........We'll see.
