6L6 Princeton Reverb update (pics)

I've got all of the holes drilled into the Champ chassis (thanks again for the chassis GomezAmps.com). I've mounted all of the tube sockets, transformers (PT, OT, and Reverb), pots, switches (except for the slider style impedance switch), cap can, Bias Test points, Reverb in/out jacks, and lamp jewel assembly.

I've wired the heater filaments for both the rectifier and all of the tubes. I'm about 95% done with the board (pics soon). I will tagboard wire the bias section near the front panel and use leads to attach it to the bias pot in the bottom rear.

All I need now is a slider switch (like the SF Champ power switches). It was the only style of switch that could fit on the already cramped Champ chassis.

The Allen Amps transformers are HUGE, but thats what happens when you mod a BFPR to take 6L6's - it needs the extra iron (plus sitting on a Champ chassis, they're ridiculously large looking).

I've got brand new EH preamp and reverb tubes and Winged C 6L6's... all I need to do now is build Champ style head cabs (one for this amp, and another for my recently built 6V6 18w in Champ chassis).

Here's some teaser pics... plenty more coming soon. Don't pay no mind to the rough cut for the slider switch in the rear - I only have hand tools and GomezAmp's chassis are tougher thicker gauge (good thing too, the trannies on this need more metal to grip to):

Yeah.

Bias Test points for me to plug my MMeter into. The bias trimpot is underneath them on the bottom of the chassis.

Johnny you have to give us some combined sound clips of this and your 18 watt. You could make a killing selling amps man...

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it again. Put both amps in the same cab with one stacked above the other and a grill between 'em. Sit 'em on a two x 12" with jacks for each speaker and you'll have the gig rig from hell!

I'll have 18w clips soon... the 6L6 BFPR should be done soon, although I am very busy... it'll be here soon enough :)

My girlfriend actually had the same idea too.

IDK, I like the ability to just bring one of them only when needed... still, it'd be cool...

Thanks guys!

I'm excited to get a sound clip of that 18w, but once this is done I'll be happy. A fixed bias 6L6 with reverb, all packed into a Champ chassis!

Stacking a couple of little Champ-like heads would be cool as well.

Just finished making the last solder...

Still waiting for the impedance slider switch to get here, so for now I wired up the 8 ohm tap to the jack.

I also ordered chassis straps, and tolex and grill cloth. I will be going with a red cab and Bluesbreaker grill cloth on the 6V6 18w head and SF/BF cosmetics on this 6L6 BFPR head.

It is 2:30am here, so I guess I won't fire it up just yet... although... forget it, I'm going back to fire it up at low volumes! BRB...

Damn.

Plugged in the tubes and Reverb tank. Fired it up and SCREACH loud oscillation (volume was turned off)... friggen loud! I woke up the dead.

So I pulled the tubes and swapped the OT wires to the 6L6 sockets (damn Brown always seems to want Blue's spot). Went to plug in the tubes and in my total lack of sleep I clumsily dropped a matched Winged C 6L6... broken glass everywhere.

Put an unmatched JJ in the other spot, just to make sure all was well. A bit noisey (mismatched and unbiased I suspect - or a ground issue), but no more screaching.

I need sleep, I am bummed about that 6L6 and don't think I have enough money to order a new pair :(

Oh well, I'll figure it all out tomorrow evening. Pics and etcetera when I am awake enough to know where I am...

Be careful working on amps when tired. 450V arm to arm can kill you. Stay cool, dude!

Well, I fired her up and got some sick screaching.

I checked the bias and it was through the roof!

BIAS SETUP:
250k Trem Intensity pot
50k bias pot
Diode
10k resistor (to 50mv PT tap)
22K resistor
50uF/150v cap

Cap is reverse wired (positive to ground)

I replaced the 22k with a 27k, and I'm still WAY too high.

5AR4 rectifier is spitting out about 335v.

Damn. I don't have time to look at this today, or the weekend until maybe Sunday. I was really looking forward to getting this amp running before Sunday, oh well :(
