Peavey Bandit Question

I have an old Peavey Bandit that I would like to use again as a backup but speaker has died . It is a Scorpion which seem to be hard to find here in Aus.
Could anyone suggest a good speaker to replace it?
All advice greatly appreciated. john.

Oddly...try a JBL E120...many moons ago, I ran a pair of Bandits as the amp/speaker combination for a pretty small yet cool stereo rack system...and the JBLs were KILLERs for that powerful but stupidly clean sound I wanted (and still want...) I tried the (then) upscaled Black Widows, but was not impressed.

If JBLs are unavailable (do they still make the E120?) then I would not hesitate to suggest a pair of Weber California 12s...

If it's CLEAN that you're after an EVM-12L if it'll clear the chassis would be a very fine speaker indeed.

I have used a Celestion Seventy 80, and a Vintage 30. Both sound good in a Peavey.

Hi, John. Another vote for the Celestion Seventy-80 - fairly efficient (98dB/W/m) and very reasonably priced. Otherwise, an Eminence Beta is a good versatile driver. Both should improve on the rather hard sound I find Scorpions provide. Don't know what your suppliers are like in WA but these shouldn't be hard to track down.

All the best from the old home town. Cheers, Tony.

I always prefer that midrange honk a Celestion Vintage 30 adds to any amp - clean or dirty (60 watt speaker). I also really dug the G12H (70th anniversary special ed.), but it's only 30 watts.

I also like AlNiCo speakers (I really dig the Jensen P15N 15"), but the Bandit may put out too many watts for the typical AlNiCo. If you like the vintage mellow top end of AlNiCo, you may want to try the new Jensen Jet Blackbird 100watt AlNiCo.

The Eminence Tonkerlite has a MASSIVE low-midrange and HUGE clean mids (125 watt). For rock its creamy, but very midrange heavy (like a honking goose). I like it, but its not for everybody. The non-neo version supposedly has more bass and even less treble.

The Jensen Neo 12-100 (100 watt) seems to exhibit some mellow nice top end and remain relatively uncolored on all other frequencies.

The additional benefit of neodymium speakers like the Jensen Neo12 and the Eminence Tonkerlite is they are very lightweight (especially for their power handling).

Thanks guys for the input. I have now got plenty to go on.
I should have said that it is for use with my Fender Stringmaster 3 neck steel.
Story is that I have 2 gigs, one after the other and need my main rig set up and ready to go. I thought that as the Peavey is more portable, it would be ideal for the first gig with the lap.
cheers.john.

Have to be sure they're well-ventilated and have big heat sinks though - neo magnets have a very low Curie point and if they are driven too hard or into clipping and overheat they've had it. Personally, through bad experience I'm not a convert.

You can get replacement baskets or voicecoils sent from the states for the Scorpion. I am a fan of these myself - they are like a poor mans' EV12L. We've had them back/back and they have the same direcitonality.

Pretty tough. I use a pair as FOH drivers with one side of a 350 watt Yamaha amp, even though they're only rated for 150 watts apiece.

Peavey speaker replacements

There's a ton of online vendors who sell the parts.

Replacment baskets
I have no affiliation with these guys - just found them through googling.
