Comparing a Rickenbacher to 5C1

Hi guys,

I've got a little old Rickenbacher M-88 tube amp (presumably part of a student lap steel set) that I recently repaired, but I find the overdriven tone to be rather harsh across all the frequencies as opposed to other 6v6 amps I've heard. This amp has got a 6SJ7 preamp and 6X5 rectifier. I've tried switching power tubes but it doesn't make a significant difference.

Are there any 5C1 owners who can tell me whether the 6SJ7 preamp is inherently harsh sounding? I've got half a mind to convert this amp over to 5C1 circuitry, but I just wanted to find out from those who already know what it sounds like. If anyone has recordings of an overdriven 5C1 I would really like to hear them.
