How to solder wires to vintage male RCA plugs
I suppose, by looking at the plug, one could solder the + wire inside the center post. How does the - wire attach? I could solder the wire to the side of the plug but it seems a bit "iffy".
They look as if they're made for shielded wire with the shield part soldering to the outside of the plug. The kit I have uses these old style plugs for the speakers. The only wire supplied is cloth covered black and white solid core. |

Here's what I do - Usually the outside of the plug has a small notch cut into a beveled flange....man this is hard to explain! .. :-) I tin the black wire, and form it around that bevel in the plug...and the wire exiting through the notch. Then solder around the circumference.
The white wire is easier...just tin the lead, shove it into the center pin, and heat the pin while feeding a little solder through the hole in the end. Try not to get solder on the outside of the center pin, as it will make it hard to plug into the mating jack. |

Well....the ones I have don't have the notch. The rest is pretty much what I planned to do. Tin, make a loop and solder it to the bottom of the plug. I have never seen a picture of one. If anyone has this type of connector on their old Fender amp maybe they could snap a pic and post it here.
Thanks Eman |
