15" Eminence Legend = Which Weber?
I'm trying to find out which Weber speaker (or Jensen) the 15" Eminence Legend sounds most like? I'm much more familiar with Webers but I've seen a couple of amps that interest me that have the 15" Legend. I'm just not familiar with the sound of that particular speaker. Anyone here heard or played through an amp loaded with one? Thanks.
Tom

Tom, I have a 15" Emi Legend in my one-holer Allen Old Flame. It has a decent round tone with maybe a bit of emphasis on the mids. It's ok. There's nothing about it that offends me. On the other hand, it doesn't have the all-around tonal pleasantness of the 12F150 in my '68 DR, for instance.
Previously I had a Weber Cali in it that originally had the Aluminum dome, and then changed it to a paper dome. The Cali sounded great at cranked levels, but was a little cold to me at low to mid volume. I was looking to go with maybe a 15F150 but Ted was selling the Emi's then for cheap, and I went for it. If I were to do it over I'd go with the 15F150 thinking it would be just a bigger-sounding version of my DR. I'd love to hear it with a 15A150, but that's a pretty spendy experiment for me.

Hey Glen,
Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I'm considering a 15" version of a Vero 20th Century or Louis Electric KR-12 (in this case KR-15) and I think they both use the Eminence Legend. I'm not sure if either or both amps are "electronically tuned to", or engineered for those speakers. I tried the 15" Weber "Cali" (paper cap) in my Vicky Pro and had a similar experience to yours. Plus, it sounded too "sizzly" to my ears so I installed a Weber 15A150 (P15N) and...Wow!! It sounds gorgeous! That's why I was wondering what the Emi Legend sounds like. The Weber 15A150 sounds superb in a Vicky Pro. But I don't know if it would sound any better than an Emi Legend in the Vero or Louis Electric. If either amp sounds as good as the samples on their websites I'm seriously tempted to save my pennies and order one of each, regardless of which speaker they come with. But I'm interested in both amps primarily for my archtop and I don't need two archtop amps. Seems like I'm going in circles here. Anyway, I need to decide on which amp to buy first then I can experiment with speakers. Tom

I built an Allen Acomplice in January with the Eminence 15" Legend and I'm using it with archtops and I really like the combination. It really likes Teles as well. It's also on sale this month at Allen Amplification, but the 15" is not. Talk to David and see what he can do for you.
PM me if you want some lowdown on pre-amp tube subs I made to tame the amp a bit for humbuckers. |

Jump: I do like that Emi Legend 15 ... have played a 1x15 Victorilux with that speaker several times. It doesn't sound exactly like any of the Webers to me.
If it were my choice, I'd get the 15F150. That's probably my favorite speaker -- any size or type -- right now. I am not sure what makes an amp "archtop" or not. So far everything I play through that Weber (in a Sewell Wampus Cat) sounds wonderful. |
