Marshall AVT 50 Head
On several occasions I have played the AVT50 combo. Each time, I remember being astonished at how pathetic it was- it generates a monotonous, dangerously uninspiring mumble, void of any Marshall tone.
(maybe I'm being a bit to harsh?) Yesterday, I had the opertunity of running the AVT50 head through an AVT 4x12. The difference is amazing- full, rich, classic Marshall overdrive with a decent clean channel to boot. The the guy who owned the AVT cab came and took it away, so I had to switch to a full on 1960A 4x12. The difference, again, was shocking. The 1960 made it sound like an amp three or four times its price, and there wasn't a chance in hell you could accuse it of being 'only 50 watts' (at least by listening, anyway) So a new amp has rocketed to the top of my list of future purchases, and it will almost certainly be an AVT50. My plan is to use my exsisting 100 solid state Marshall for a while, then sell that for a 4x12. So far, people have moaned that 'you are losing 50 watts' and have recommended the four channel beast that is the AVT150, but I fail to see the point. You could almost buy another cab with the excess expenditure for the 150. And then who would be rocking? You with a Marshall full stack, or a broke guy with 150 watts wasted on a 1x12? And all the AVT50 asks in return is that you crank the volume a little more.
