My new Tweed Deluxe Clone (Richter)
I have not had a lot of time with it as it came in just before I had to leave fro DC this week. I am dying to get back home to it. It arrived very well packed and in perfect shape. I unpacked it and installed the tubes. I pulled the back and looked things over. I played it through the 1x12 C12N that it has stock. I also tried it with a Texas Heat in a closed back 1x12, 2x12 closed back with V30's (Avatar), and a semi-closed 1x12 with a Cannabis Rex (Solid 1/2 " pine about the size of a pro reverb). I tried the 4 channels out, jumped channels and ran various effects through it.
In sum - This thing is amazing. It sounds good with any of the speakers, with each emphasizing what that speaker does best. I used a bucker equipped semi-hollow VW with mahogany body and quilt carved top (24.75" scale). It is one of my favorite guitars as it is so versitile. It has a Seth Lover neck, vintage stack middle and Custom 5 in the bridge. It has 5 way switching and a neck-bridge blend pot (spits for middle and bridge as well). The pedals I tried included Duncan Twin Tube, SD-1, BD-2, DS-1 Seeing Eye Style mod, Keeley Fuzz Head, Reflector Reverb, ED-1 compressor and DD-6 delay. The amp handed the pedals very well. The speaker was important, as was amp setting, for the Fuzz as it is with any other 5e3 that I have played. It has a clean that was deep, 3d and present - the protopypcial 5e3 clean. Smiles where ear to ear on this one. The various outputs varied the sound as expected and the jumpered channels did what they were supposed to do. I like to play jumped a lot so I will probably spend more time with that at some point. The country grit was classic Tweed Deluxe cool. The crunch is tweed deluxe grind all the way. Overll this is the tone of a classic Tweed Deluxe. The amp was as sensitive to volume changes and pick attack. I could not play with the "edge" much though as family are home tonight and it is too loud for cranked in the house. When tested flat out for a few measures, it had the ZZ top and Cream tones easily. This is a VERY sweet amp. The tweed on the solid pine cab was well applied. The various screws and fitting were perfect. The chassis was held in place with nylon (I liked it) grommets and bolts as well as screws. It appeared to kill any possible rattle noise this way. Everything fit perfectly. The chassis was the neatest wired chassis I have ever seen. I could find nothing more accurate to say other than "impressive." The only thing at all which was a negative was that one of the tubes has a slight tube rattle (Sympathetic to a note or two). But, this is not the builder's fault at all. I Suspect that unless you spent a fair bit of time playing the amp with the tubes in it one would never have know it was there. Further as any tube can develop a rattle, and it does so on it's own accord on it's own time line in my experience, I do not see this as any issue at all. I have not had time to see which it is at this point. I will try various tubes in it at some point anyway, just to see what works best with my rig. I have a 5e3 head and this is a far better done version of this amp all the way around. I need to find a cover, and decide how I want to treat the tweed. It is such a nice amp I am actually a bit worried I might get it dirty! My Les Paul is the only other piece of gear I have that pulls that emotion from me. All this and it has 2 year limited coverage! I have to say, having looked at the various custom builders, and "boutique" 5e3 style amps (and fender style amps) some of which are well known and very spendy, this amp is seriously on par with any of them. I feel as if I stole the amp from the maker. It is seriously the best deal I have hit in a long while. If you do not have a compulsion for perfect reproduction of a 5e3 in every dimension, and every spec this thing has everything you could want in a 5e3 style amp. It is classic prototypical 5e3 all the way. Pictures (from site but is exactly like mine). http://home.mchsi.com/~richter_ampli...on/newdel1.JPG http://home.mchsi.com/~richter_ampli...on/newdel2.JPG http://home.mchsi.com/~richter_ampli...5e3ginside.JPG

Did I see this review on TGP?? I have a Richter too, great amp for the $$! Actually, a great amp at any price! Less than half of what Fender is charging for their new RI.
Put a NOS 5y3 in there. I have a Weber copper cap on the way too to see how that works. It should eliminate one rattle! Personally I don't see the need for pedals with that amp as it has very little headroom. Playing out with it I turn it up to 6 or 8 and use the volume on my Guitar. Tele -> 5E3 is the perfect combination (unless you need loud & clean!) Contact custom amp covers, I just got one from them and it's pretty nice.

Yes, you saw much of this review on the TGP. I thought this group may find it helpful as well. You obviously play larger venues, as even with a bucker equipped guitar I am not able to "crank" this amp in a lot of settings, and certainly not in the home studio without complaints. Pedals, rack gear and modeling amps are a part of my survival. The amp is an unbelievable bargain to me.

How does one find info on this builder or his amps?
Thanks for the review...

And no, I don't play big places just clubs sometimes and open jams where we "garage band" it, just vocal mics and everyone fends for themselves! Too many people at jams play way too loud but this allows me to keep up. I can't wait to take it out on Thursday, I'll be at a great blues club jamming with an old friend!

The amp builder is a she. Sara Richter. She has a web site on ebay. Richter Amplification I believe. There is also info on Harmony Central. There are several reviews on the web site The Gear Page as well. There were several on my short list of builders, and she happened to be the one with the amp available when I had the cash. I was going to get a Little Dawg but hit a wedding when my time on the list came up and I had to pass. I am sure it is a great amp as well, but I do no think I would have been any happier than I am with the Richter.
I think it is ....

Sounds like it too!! I've got a 5E7/Bandmaster-inspired head Sara made last year, and I absolutely love it. It is literally a central part of the sound I've set up for my Tele (I surround it with two 1x12 cabs coming from a stereo single-ended EL84 amp, Lexicon Signature 284, where I run my Chandler delay). I run the Richter through a custom 3x10 cab.
Sara does great work, and helps us make glorious sounds. I like it so much I had to jump in on the Richter 5E3 thread at TGP, and post a couple of photos of my 5E7+. Check 'em out here. - Thom |

I think that the new price for the 5E3 is $825, which is a STEAL! This amp would sell for half again as much from any other builder. My tweed deluxe search (Fender, Victoria, Kendrick, Vintage etc.) ended with my Richter. Sara builds a world class amp at a budget price. I bought mine used for $560! That left me plenty of money for an audiophile power cable, Weber Ceramic Blue Dog speaker, El Dorado Vintage Handle and a Studio Slips (Highly recommended) cover.
My amp also had tube rattle. It think that the JJs that come with the amp are really quite prone to this problem. They are a great sounding tube, and I found that the $10 silicon tube rings that are sold on Ebay are the perfect solution. 2 rings around each power tube and also around the rectifier eliminated my tube rattles. The Richter is now the best tweed deluxe I've ever played live. It does everything I want it to do, and I can't imagine having a better "Go to" amp. Here's a shot of my Richter. I spent a full day lacquering and tinting the tweed.

I don't know about the lead time. It seems that Sara just builds a few amps at a time and then puts them up for sale on eBay.
There is a used one on the Emporium section of The Gear Page right now. $675, and it looks perfect.

I built a Mission 5E3 kit a year ago. Very high quality components. They are fun to build, and there's a lot of satisfaction involved in playing something you built. Cost-wise, if you are already tooled up you'll save some money with the Mission. If you have to buy the tools you will need, that narrows the gap. The Richter, assembled, is a great buy.

Crossing this thread with another current thread.
If you go to her ebay store with the link that Doc provided you will read where she is leaving ebay behind because of the recent ebay policy and fee changes. She also has a 5E3 type with 3 Jensen Neo 10's up on ebay right now. Sweet. |

I'm still using my Richter 5e3 alot...interestingly enough I think it sounds better with modern JJ 6V6's than NOS 6V6's (I've tried Marconi/Westinghouse's and even RCA Blackplates)...
I took it to a Guitar Shop today to A/B with a Fender Deluxe Reverb RI and I thought the Richter sounded way better, like night and day... I need to find a good Reverb unit for it... |

If you haven't tried Digitech's new Hardwire Series Reverb, you should. It's the most realistic reverb pedal I've ever tried.
