'73 Vibro Champ clips, w/ 8", 12" V-30's,12" Weber Cali's ,10" '64 CTS speakers

I decided to make some clips of my '73 VC with it's own original 8" speaker, my '66 Pro Reverb's 12" Celestion V-30's, my '69 Vibrolux Reverb's 10" '64 CTS's, and finally my '66 Bassman cab's 12" Weber California's. I did a clip for each speaker setup using my Marshall Bluesbreaker II for the Overdrive and then a clean and clean with Vibrato clip. Here's the link:

My favorite clean was the original speaker, then the cali. V30 was way too dark for me, and the CTS was nice, just a bit bland.

Best dirty- tie between the V30 and the CTS- each could be very useful in different mixes. The original was super ratty, and the cali was too hollow and disappeared.

I would have liked to hear the natural amp overdrive rather than a pedal, fwiw.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to do such a good test and post it here!

The original 8" speaker sounds a bit bright, but good for the dirt. The clean sound was very good. Nice warm tone.

The Celestion V30's were a bit boxey sounding all the way around.

The 10" '64 CTS's weren't very good for the dirty sound but were great on the clean tone and sound better than the original speaker on the Vibrato setting.

The 12" Weber California's great in all the clips and again, sounded better than the original speaker on the Vibrato setting.

Thanks for sharing!

I'll see when I can set up my studio to record the amp with it's natural overdrive. I'll find a day when no one's home cause I know I'm going to rattle the wall of the studio for sure.

GREAT tones! I LOVE the vc clean with the 8" speaker. i think that is KILLER clean tone! well played. very tasty indeed. thanks for taking the time to put all those clips together, it really demonstrates the differing tonal attributes of each amp in a quick and easy to evaluate way. Like F.Z. once said; "...talking about music is like dancing about architecture..."

man!

what a cool comparison! thanks for sharing...

it always surprises me how different fenders can sound with other cab's AND even how good a champ can sound with it's little bitty stock speaker/cab...crazy!
