CTS Speakers in 1980 Vibrolux
Hi everyone it's my first post after lurking for a couple weeks. It's been a fun read.
So after owning this Blackface Vibrolux for about 15 years I decided to figure out when it was made. I was told at the store it was sometime in the 80's and it ends up being a 1980. I looked up the speaker code and it's loaded with original CTS tens. Any opionions on these speakers? I like them, but never played through an older Fender with Jensens. Just wondering, Doug |

I have a rather large collection of vintage alnico speakers.I have a pair of CTS's as well as a number of Jensen's.I will have to say i preffer the Jensens over the CTS, but thats not to say the CTS are bad speakers,id choose them over any ceramic speaker thats for sure, i am assuming your cts are alnico?

I have some CTS alnico twelves I just aquired out of a old Silvertone Stereo amp and they sound very good in the 2x12 box I made for them. No they would not stand up to my Bass head but for a 15 -20 watt tube amp they sound great.

I love the stock CTS alnico 10s in a super reverb. Don't know as I would like them the same in a VR, where there are only two. With 4 together, those relatively inefficient speakers add up to something magical. I've heard old VRs with stock alnicos, have to say I prefer ceramics in that amp. Will be trying two Emi copperheads in a friend's VR soon.
CTS 12" alnico, different story. I have an old Sano with 2 of these. What a great, round sound, just as good as vintage Jensen stuff. |

Everyone associated CTS with guitar speakers.
They also made speakers for stereo systems. My 1970's Avid 100's use CTS woofers & tweeters. Pretty nice sounding...for a $20 yard sale buy. Steve |

Ignorance is bliss. When you don't know what year your amp is made or what kind of speakers is in it, how it's wired, transformer outputs ect. It' s just a 50 lb. Fender Sound machine that both rings and screams. Even as a pathetic old fat, bald basement jammer I long for the perfect tone.
It's fun. |

Nowdays you buy a stereo speaker you get a stereo speaker you buy a instrument speaker you get a instrument speaker. I think back in the early days up to the 70's a speaker like my CTS 12 inch ALNICO could be found in a stereo or a amp or a organ. Same Speaker. The CTS 12 inch speakers I took out of a 1969 Silvertone Stereo sound great in a 2x12 box I built with my Silvertone 1472 using that box and having my main speaker in the amp disconected as they are both a 4 ohm load. I made a plate on my amp that has 4 and 8 ohm jacks on it with the speaker in my amp hooked up with a quarter inch plug on it so I can use the main speaker of a extension cab. Now I am not saying any stereo speaker out of a old system maybe good for a lower powered tube amp but I think many are. |
