Me Too...I gotta have a new combo...but...

Forgive me for any duplication, but hippietim's question is a little different from mine.

I need a new combo...but one that's great for gigging. I need lots of clean volume, but I can't carry around a heavy amp (ruptures @ T5 & T8). I thought a Deluxe Reverb would be the way to go, so I got a new DRRI a while back and ended up trading it back in recently. Not enough headroom, and the bottom end was too woofy.

I've got your standard Tele w/ a Broadcaster guitar, I play mostly with just my fingers and thumb. The band does everything from country pop to country rock (Brad Paisley to The Eagles).

I would love to have a Twin, but they're just too darn heavy for me. I don't need channel switching, and the fewer knobs the better. Twin tone in a 1x12 combo suggestions anyone? I'm not a brand snob.

errrr a HRD ?

40 watts two channels, sounds good. Lots of clean headroom. The clean is what it does best.

How about a Fender super 60, red knob? 1-12 and 60 watts.

What about splittin' it up?

My live rig is a Dr. Z KT 45 and one of two 2x12 cabs. The KT-45 has a lot of clean headroom - clean enough for me to plug in an acoustic/electric and get respectable sounds at small club volume.

With a separate head and cab you really open yourself up to quite a few more options and give your back additional relief. I know it's not as handy as a combo, but we're not talking about any more than one more cord to connect. It also let's you take smaller or larger cabs as the needs arise. Just my .02

Super 60

There's a used Super 60 at the local store right now...I've played through it a few times...and I do like it...it's a steal at $199.00. That would be low enough to justify retubing it right off the bat....hmmm.

As for heads and cabs...that's certainly a different way to look at it. But I like making only one trip from the car to the stage. Amp in one hand, pedal board case in the other, and guitar on my back, backpack straped in a gig bag. I usually have to pay for parking...two blocks down, so I hate making two trips.

i'm not baard but a HRD is a hot rod deluxe (fender). if i remember correctly, baard plays country and used one before he got his super reverb. he speaks pretty highly of the HRD's.

also, are you looking to get a ready made combo or could you put one together? i'm someone who likes a project so the first thing i thought of wasa silverfaced bandmaster head. build a 1x12 combo cab for it and buy a 1x12 speaker. just a thought.

I'd shy away from the Super 60. They are very service-unfriendly. The circuit board is mounted with the components on the bottom. You cannot access them without pulling the board, which means you cannot access them when the amp is turned on. Thus it is nearly impossible to trace a signal to diagnose a failed component. Fender should have shot for this design! I would advise owners of these and others with this design (including post-Rivera Concerts and Supers) to get off of them while they are still working.

Reverend Hellhound?

Over at the FDP, they rave about the tone & workmanship of the REverend Hellhound.

I have a good friend that has one, & says it's "the best gigging amp ever". I haven't hheard it myself, but he's got pretty good ears.

Anyway, for under $700 shipped, it's a pretty killer deal.

& no, I don't work for them! :D

working dog?

I haven't played with one but I've been interested in the alessandro working dog series -- looks like their 2x10 40 watt amp is only about 36 pounds, which seems completely reasonable for a gigging amp. all hand-wired, etc. worth checking out if you can find one, maybe. good luck.

Fender 30,
All tube (incl reverb and rectifier), nice clean sound, I don't like the second channel but the clean channel loves pedals.

I'd really like to suggest the Dr.Z Z-28.. same power tube compliment as a Deluxe Reverb, but sounds much much bigger.. I've seen 1x12 combos for $800-900 before..

Yeah, the Reverend!

FWIW, I was recently inside a Hellhound, and was very impressed. Everything is very accessible. I'd definitely score it above the entry level tube amps from Fender (like the HRD), Peavey, Crate, etc... Really a no frills amp with great features like 40-60w switch, tube reverb, gain cut/boost on the front end. All at a pricetag that is very tolerable. Definitely worth a look.
