What a difference a speaker makes (Oh my Gawd!)

I just tried a Lab Series L5 with CTS speakers. I tried and tried and could NOT make that thing sound anywhere near like my L11 head. It sounded very bad. I tweaked and tweaked to no avail. Finally, I disconnected the speakers and ran the amp into a Marshall 4x12. THERE IT WAS! With minimal tweaking too!

Since I have an L5 in the repair shop, and I'm thinking about what speakers to get for it, I'm trying to decide what role the cabinet itself plays in the tone factor.

I once owned a Boogie Mk1 that went through three different kinds of speakers, and I hated every one. It was only after I plugged it into a seperate cab that I found a decent tone. So, I'm concerned that good speakers may not help this amp much.

I'm seriously thinking about cutting the amp apart and making it into a head, that way I can run it into the cab of my choice. I've got a line on Celestion G100's for $60. Reckon I should try them in the amp as is, and if I don't like it then I can turn the amp into a head, and use the speakers in a cab.

Hmmm... what to do, what to do???

BTW I'm running my L11 head into a Peavey Classic 50 4x10 cab with the stock Eminence speakers, which are considered bad, but it sounds GREAT.

Hey Trag!

The one that I had came with some of the Carvin V30 clones. It sounded pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. I just got tired of draggin' the beast around...then I went and got a SF Pro Reverb! Go figure.

Just a thought, and they are pretty cheap too!

Cheap?!?

I paid $20 for the L5 that's in the repair shop! I paid $100 for the L11 head, which I thought was a great deal, even though it looks like it was dragged down a dirt road. Works great, sounds excellent. It's been my main amp for a few weeks now, and I've been leaving the tube jobs at home
