twin reverb speaker selection

I just scored a '68 twin and got it cheap(er) because it came unloaded, now I'm mainly a deluxe reverb kinda guy playing trad.country, clean tele picking,so thinking along those lines, what would you guys recommend to load this amp with,BTW,I use a jbl d-131 in my deluxe but I ain't gonna put jbl's in a twin!

Congrats on the new amp!

I'd say it first depends on your tastes for it's treble. "Bright and clear", or "warm and soft"? Then I'd go with a Ceramic magnet'ed speaker for brightness and clarity or an AlNiCo for mellow vintage warmth.

After that, your tastes in mids for the cone selection :)

If you're big into cleans, the Twin will have MILES of it! If you ever want to drop the Deluxe, let me know ;)

ive been looking for the same answer re my 67 bf twin

heres a comment/observation from this weekends speaker comparison

i recently ab/d my bf 67 with one utah and one oxford versus a cab with two weber ceramic calif-a back to back twin -simply changing the speaker jack into my amp-same height same position, twin cab, simply the change in speakers

here ar my observations-

mine has VERY inefficient speakers-so i can turn the amp to the sweet spot (around 6 to 7) and get the tubes singing ie brown-and still not need ear plugs!!!!(now thats really inefficient for a twin)

-its really pretty nice sounding -i was pleased-musical, defined-a little flabby if too much bass (this is the major difference i think-bass response) - utahs do this...still i was pleased with the sound in not only a dead room but a very alive reflective wood room-id say theres not as much cut in a band mix however-gotta use the bright switch-but plenty if you eq -actually pretty usable on the non-melt-down-volume aspect

the webers ...i immediately heard the ceramic aspect in comparison..less round and warm...more defined...a bit harsh... but.....for lack of a better term...very muscular..in your face -more of everything EXCEPT warmth...and geezzzzz very efficient and paint peeling loud...i mean like 100 W marshall half stack loud

and i azlso tried a mix of celestions (not going over 5 so as not to blow the speakers-celestion is coming out with the golds for higher watt applicaations-i like the g 12 30 h and vintage 30 sound ...has the clean but also some brit chime and grit-nice nice nice but not classic twin-this wasin a closed back 2 x12 and not going over 5 on the twin so as not to fry the g 12 30-much more basss (probably the cab) nice wrmth and speaker break up-but obviously these are not a viable aspect for a twin-but presuming the new golds may have this similar celestion type sound-pretty cool-and here im talking rock, blues, and actually country twang but with that brit grit voice

while i have decided not to change my speakers at the present-theres no doubt i would go alnico-califs likely-hard to beat overall-but id also like to hear the celestion golds beacuse i really like this sound -it makes the twin a bit more interesting-very nice sound for rock

the weber chicagos are also recommended by many for classic twin sound ( i think these are a jenson type clone) but i havent heard them

i dont like the brittle sound of cereamics in the side by side-they may however be the best for a live band mix-but they just sounded a bit raw by comparison

hope this helps a bit
