tone of a 18 clone

I love el84īs with teles, I love simple.
Missed my old Traynor guitarmate and Voxes so I had to do something.
Now itīs finally coming together (made by a local builder) and it sounds great!
Love the cab I bought from tubetown Germany.
Wider than I thought, could almost take 2 12".
Very stable for one G12H 30 though.
I can go from cleanish country to rock nīroll rawness.
Itīs a Marshall 18 watt-type amp with volume tone and cut. Thats it.
Will use it together with a mosFET based boost.
Canīt wait to try it out in band-rehearsal tonight...

Cool. Please tell me about the cut control.

Also, what's that little box next to the power tubes?

Don't forget -

to plug in that speaker, or it won't sound like much....!

Looks like a beauty. I had a home-made 2 x EL84 amp, based on a Vox AC-30 TB design with a closed-back cab w/ one 15" JBL K130. That was a great amp. Hope yours makes you happy.

The little box is just a little plate containing input
speaker jack and 4, 8, 16 ohm selector switch.

The cut works like on a Vox. Turn it up to cut high treble.
Hereīs how I use it (Iīm no tech):
If I turn down "tone" the bass sometimes gets a little
owerwhelming while playing chords.
I can then instead turn up the tone a little but
also tame the highest frequencies
with cut. Quite sophisticated for two knobs really.
Played the amp at rehearsal last night. Iīm delighted!
I love Fender amps too but to me the sometimes are
to thin-sounding live. I now got a fatsounding alternative.
"Organic" is a cliché indeed, but that it is...
Cheers,

18s are addictive.

Love those cabinets.

I really like the G12H30 (yours is the Heritage I see, mine's just the 70th Anniversary model) with these amps. It sounds good with a Fender Deluxe too.

Yeah, I had a hard time choosing speaker but took a chance
on this one and Iīm glad I did.
Full even sound without being harsh.
Donīt know much about Celestions but this one is from 1978.
Tried a vintage 30 first but didnīt like it at all with this amp.
Too much of both highs and lows.

That's a very cool looking rig. I've got a Celestion G12H-30 in my Goodsell Super 17 (a 2xEL84 amp) and my Tele loves it, as do my LP and Strat.
I'm a recent 2xEL84 convert.
Now I realize what I've been missing all these years!

I recently finished my 18watt build as well.

I mod'ed it to run on 6V6's, and pretty much have turned the power section into a Fender Deluxe.

I've got a "double" version with four EL84's as well that I built.

I hear you on the V30s... but I am a V30 junkie, so I can't stop myself. I also liked the sound through my Jensen P15N AlNiCo 15"... my 6V6 18w will be in a small easy to carry cab with a single 12" Eminence Tonkerlite that's just sitting in a box here.

Great sounding circuit... let us know how it sounded in band rehearsal!

Sounded fan-krreeeang!-tastic.
Although not necessary I put a mic in front for just a "little extra"
through the PA.
Iīm old and in my youth I had 50-100 watters on stage,
but in those days PAīs were to weak to be used for anything but voice.
Iīm very grateful you can get such good amps ptp homebuilt nowadays.
In the 70īs guys rebuilt Fenders with cascading gain stages,
7 confusing volume-pots and what not... (aka the Boogie-plague)
All distortion, no tone.
My Marshall 18 is built with a little more headroom than "stock".
This is because I usually think itīs a to big a difference
between amps with two and with four El84īs.
Sometimes the 15-18 watt is to weak and 30 watt is to much for me.
I really like the way the volume works on this amp.
At "6" itīs already as loud as can be. From then on itīs just
more powertube filth added...

I got curious and listened to the sounds of Goodsell here:

Wow, sounds great with that strat!
Congrats on a fine amp!

Thanks! The first few clips were done by Joe Davies...they're the ones that ultimately sold me on the amp.
The last clip (Super 17 & Mark Gordon) is me using my Les Paul. The amp is very versatile, great for live playing and for recording.
Congrats to yourself on a fine amp as well!
