I just received a Blues Custom 30 schematic from Bob Burns so they are available. It is 988 kb in size and is in pdf format. When converted to jpeg it is 5000 x 3500 pixels. Kinda big! It was last updated on August 25th.

As a side note: The recommended footswitch for the Epiphone Blues Custom 30 is the EPA-FSB (according to Bob Burns). To the best of my knowledge, there are not any vendors on the Internet or anywhere else that stock these footswitches. Since I purchased my amp from Musician's Friend, I though it was only logical to purchase the footswitch from them as well. When I first emailed Musician's Friend, they said that footswitch was unavailable, even though it was shown in the pictures with the amp, and recommended another switch. When I pressed them on the matter they said it was available but they don't stock it. Since then, they have Photoshoped the switch out of the pictures and have said the switch is available but would cost $100 (minimum order thingy) plus shipping. The model switch they give was not even the correct switch, by the way.
Fast forward: I have contacted the following company which has always given me stellar service and prices: E.M. SHORTS GUITARS 2525 E. DOUGLAS WICHITA, KS 67211 USA FAX: 316-684-6858 PHONE: 316-684-6252 OTHER PHONE: 316-684-0291 ORDER LINE: 800-835-3006 hours: M-F 10:00 - 6:00 Saturday 10:00 - 2:00 They now have me one on order. I know Musician's Friend is a sponsor of this forum but I get more pi$$ed off with Musician's Friend every day! |

Hello smart guys!
Just read this entire thread and wow, seriously, you guys know more about amps than I've ever cared to know in my 30 years as a guitarist. What I'd like to know is what does this Epi Blues Custom 30 sound like, compare to? I have played on many Marshalls and fender twins. I currntly play an amer. deluxe tele thru an Orange ad30r and I am pretty darn close to happy. I really want to try out a vox ac30 but I'm very interested in this tantelizing model. No, not that model, the Epi. Please post a description of tone!
thanks, Jeffrey |

What????
Doing what? My first post has serious questions. I really am interested in the sound of this amp! My second post was my mistake. I thought I was adding a personal quote to my identity and I really do listen to my stereo at top (clear) volume and really don't care for humbuckers.
Didn't intend to offend! Jeffrey |

Great site, this is just the type of discussion about this amp that I was looking for.
I bought a Blues Custom about 2 weeks ago, initially I thought pretty much the same as everybody else, the amp was extremely bright sounding, a bit harsh, and lacking in both volume and clean headroom. Interesting discussion you guys are having here, I would say the power output of this amp "seems" less than 30 watts to me also. I base that on the fact that this amp has quite a bit less output than my Peavy Delta blues(30 watts), and my Pignose G40V(40 watts), both of those amps have a pretty strong clean channel that can get quite painful volume wise in my guitar room.. The BC30 will get plenty loud for practice playing, but it won't quite get to that painful level. I also notice that the volume knob pretty much does nothing past halfway on either channel of the amp as far as increasing the sound level. I also notice that the low end gets pretty muddy at a little less than half way on the volume knob on either channel.. I ordered JJ tubes for this thing a day or two after I got it, cause I have them in all my other amps. I will say they helped quite a bit, I replaced everything, power, pre amp, reverb and rectifier. I specified to Bob at Eurotubes that I wanted a bit more clean head rooom, and he recomended some #52 6L6GC's for it.. Maybe one of you guys with tube knowledge can expand on what the "#52" represents.. Either way, the JJ's sound much better, but I didn't notice a change in clean headroom.. I do have a question for you amp experts. I am curious can I just plug and play with different reverb tanks? Can somebody explain on what the differences are on the bigger and smaller reverb tanks, and what differences the number of springs in the reverb tank make to the sound of the reverb? I am really wanting a deeper reverb from this thing, something like a fender reverb. Would changing the tank have an effect on this? My main thing is I don't wanna damage the amp by plugging something in that won't work. |

Hello everyone,
sweetwater.com has had the foot switch for the BC and SC on their website for a while now. As of this very second they claim that it'll be arriving at their warehouse in a couple days. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EPAFSB/ If I remember correctly, the footswitch can change the channel and turn on/off the reverb. So there ya go. |

I had some questions about this amp myself. I know nothing about amps so I think you guys will be able to help. The amp's got 5 different speaker inputs in the back, 2-4 ohms, 2-8 ohms, and one 16 ohm input. Now, it's got 2-16 ohm speakers in it and they say in the manual (paraphrased) that it's wired parallel for 8 ohms. I was wondering what all that means. I was also wondering about a speaker extension. If I were to ever have another speaker cabinet at my disposal, what specs would that cabinet have to have? It's saying in the manual that (and you guys probably already know this, I'm just saying it for myself) I shouldn't use two cabs with different impendance ratings. So in my mind, if I had a 16 ohm cabinet then I could plug that and the speakers on my amp into the two 8 ohm jacks and everything would be alright, right? Anyway, thanks for help and everything.

It has two jacks for 8 ohms and 4 ohms so that you can plug two cabs, or one cab and the speakers in the amp to match that impedence... So lets say you had an 8 ohm cab that you wanted to hook up, well the speakers in the amp are an 8 ohm load because they are two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel. So you plug the wire for the speakers in the amp into one of the 4 ohm jacks and the wire to your 8 ohm cab in the other 4 ohm jack. Because your total load is 4 ohms. A 16 ohm cabinet and the speakers in the amp would give a total load of 12 ohms, I would imagine you could plug it into the two 8 ohm jacks without causing damage, but ideally I think you would want an 8 ohm cab so that you could use the two 4 ohm jacks. Or you could run two 16 ohm cabs and leave the speakers in the amp unhooked and plug both cabs into the two 8 ohm jacks. |

ok, I think that that's making sense. Thank you. One question about that, though. Does it matter how many speakers are in the cabinet? For example, if I had a 16 ohm cab with 4-12" speakers, would I be able to just plug it into the 16 ohm jack? Thanks

Latest Episode?
Well , I'm still hanging on the edge of my seat for the results from Bloozcat, Tremo and pals. Has anyone tried the EL34, 6L6 and assorted optional valves/tubes and what were the results? It's as if the final chapter of a detective novel is missing. Also, has anyone experimented with the rectifier tube and what were the results. Look forward to the findings.

Thos Eminence Lady Lucks are the same speakers they put in the Epiphone Valva Junior Cab which I converted into a LIL Dawg D'Luxe 5E3. The Lady Luck sounds great in it which surprised me. I thought I'd more than likely end up buying one of the classic speakers for the 5E3.

I just picked up ones of these Blues Custom 30s today, used.
Does anyone know where I can get a MANUAL? It's all very straightforward, except the multiple speaker outputs -- not sure how those work.

Which Tubes
Well,
My Custom 30 just arrived the other day. And yes it is a complete icepick. Though as the speakers break in, I think it's getting better. But a retubing it must have. So, I know there has been lots of talk about this tube and that tube on this thread. But I was wondering what you people would recommend for a nice clean warm tone in the custom 30. Distortion isn't that important to me, just a little bit of break up. I love Fender 65 RI Supers, two rocks and Fender 65 RI Twins. If that gives you any reference point. Thanks! |
