Taming a twin

sorry....my mind just goes odd places sometimes. but reading a recent post on speaker efficiency and how a 3 db boost can add significant increase in volume. it makes me ask the question as to whether there are any speaker choices out there with very inefficient speakers that still had the dynamic range that could tame a twin and so it could be cranked and still be useful in smaller venues.

i ain't the sharpest tool in the shed..but i can usually take a good edge

The Oxfarts made in the 70s are pretty inefficient. Trouble is, they also sound pretty lame.

You can remove a pair of output tubes and drop the power by 3 dB.

Else, you can get an output attenuator.

Maybe the best thing is to do what the rest of us do, and that is to get a smaller amp for the smaller gigs. A Deluxe Reverb is a wonderful amp for the clubs. Much easier to transport than a Twin, great tone, not too loud.

Yeah or change the speaker to efficient speaker like Celestion, Jensen, or JBL, CTS.

As for taming it unless your twin is the current Fender Professional Tube Twin with 25/100 watt power switch you might want to look into something a little less power like suggested.

i just thought there was a way to saturate this thing and still not rock the foundations. i love the tone of this thing.
i guess what i want is a 30-40 watt SFTR with 2x12 and reverb and trem.

is that too much to ask ?....lol

its taken me buying and fooling around with a bunch of amps to find this but thats the sound i want. i like the clean sound of the twin with the depth and dimension a 2x12 give.

You could unplug a speaker, which will drop the amp to about 70 watts due to increasing secondary impedance of 8 ohms. That will still be awfully loud cranked and might pop the remaining speaker. Plus you'll have one of the heaviest 1 x 12s in the world.

The solution is, as Tremo said, a smaller amp. I play a 2 x 10 Vibrolux and still get told to turn down plenty - often just off that point where there's some nice semi-clean happening. I had a MV Pro and with the master on 6 and the channel on 2 it was still often too loud for a bar venue.

Nothin beats the sound of an overdriven tube amp. Wish I could afford one. Doesn't Fender have a Pre and a Post Volume? I'm a Peavey guy that wants a tube sound from a solid state amp.

My first thought was to turn your amp down, but It's the overdriven sound you want. Hmmm. How about a pedal. This pedal sounds like it would be close to the sound you want.

I've got a Sparkle Drive from Voodoo Labs and it's very nice.
I suggest borrowing one from an owner with more than one Amp.
Mine's usually always on and lately I've been considering getting a
second one just to see what happens with two.
Personally I've always found 4x10 combos to be "the pits" when it comes
to load-in and the dreaded end of the night load-out.
The fellow in Phish used to carry two Deluxe Reverbs to the job and he always
had a tremendous Tone IMHO.
