Have a simple tech question on crate amp modification
I have a crate Limo TX50DBE battery powered amp, related to the taxi series of amps. I want to run a second non-powered speaker cabinet from it. I dont want to do any soldering on this thing, and IM not that electronically savy. If I run some speaker wire to the inside of this amp, take some alligator clips and clip the wires on the existing speaker terminals in the amp, will I be able to get sound to come out of both speakers? And will I risk blowing up circuitry/stuff in this amp? What should I use for ohmz for speakers, 4 or 8? I want to run anothther 10 inch cabinet from this so I can get sound from both speakers. ANy other ideas advice or suggestions would be appreciated,
thanks, Ben |

Well...
it's certainly safer than to try that with a solid state amp, but by how much is questionable.
If you insist on doing it, I would go with the highest ohm rated external speaker available. 16 ohms would be optimal if you could find one. The reason is that you'll be running the two speakers in parallel with your describe method, and that drops the ohms value. Drop the value too much, and you will be straining what your power amp section can do. Even with solid state, this can be disastrous. I've often witnessed fried solid state power amp circuitry that has been fried by dropping the ohm load to 2 ohms or lower. Wire 2 4 ohm speakers in parallel and you are already at 2 ohms, and probably going to get into trouble. Another thing to think about is, if the amp runs on batteries, another speaker will most likely just drain them faster, possibly considerably.
