1x12 or 2x10 combo?
I am considering a Bad Cat Cub II 15 watt combo but must decide between a 1x12" and a 2x10". I've read what Bad Cat says about either configuration choice but I still have a couple of questions. What do you Tele players prefer? Would the choice of a combo with or without reverb affect your choice of speaker configuration? What if I went with a different Bad Cat amp that has a higher wattage--would your choice in speaker configuration change?

It depends on what you like
I like the sound of 10´s so I have a super reverb with 4 10". For miking it up, you would get a louder sound from one source(a 12") than from one of the 10´s in a 2x10 configuration. That might also be something to consider. Anyway that´s just a thought I´ve got, not something I know, so others might correct me if I´m wrong. Another thing is that I find the SR 10´s a bit easier to mike up, to get a good sound in the mix. They are a bit more focused than my old HRD´s 12" but that might be the different amp. Different makes and models would also sound different, even in the same dimentions.....It´s not that simple.....

Not sure what speakers are in those, but the 10's might have a lower wattage and could tend to breakup earlier than a 12.
Generally speaking that is. ;)

That is a good question....
I have amps with 1-12 (BFDR & JJ-30), 2-10's (Matchless Lightning w/reverb, and 4-10's (BFSR). I generally find the 10's to be a little more focused but it's hard to beat a good 12". Kinda a question of apples vs. oranges. I find the amount of wattage, type of tubes, etc. will also make a difference.
Having both a 1-12 & 2-10 Matchless is hard to compare because of the difference in wattage (40 vs. 15). I'd guess that the 12 will give you a little more punch but the 10's will provide a tighter bass. How many watts is the Bear Cat? I'm sure that there are people in here that can give you a better answer but any of the Matchless/BearCat amps are killer. later. wilbur

my general rule of thumb is that 2x10s sound better than 1x12s. You've got more total speaker surface area in the 2x10 configuration, plus I believe there's something about the interaction between more than one speaker that fills out the sound in a nice way.

Thanks, all of you for posting, or for just plain reading the post. This is a great place we have here--thank you, Paul
I think it will probably be a 2x10" when I take the plunge. I already have a 40 watt Blues Pearl Verbrasonic with two 10" Jensens in it . I plugged in my new Silver Sparkle Telecaster, that I bought from Music One Workshop, with the Texas Special pups, selected pup position 2 (of 4) and turned The Verbrasonic up to 9 last night. It was tone heaven--so much so that I asked myself if I really needed a Bad Cat Cub II, but I really need something to fill the bill between my Vibro Champ and Champ and the Blues Pearl. ![]() |

bad cat
i have the Cub II with reverb in 1 / 12......
it is unlike any other single 12 I have ever played I'm sure it has to do with the speaker 2/10's are good too and I have played many but in the Bad Cat the 1/12 sounded best to me so that's what I went with..... hate to say it, but your other amps are gonna become fixtures that need dusting.... those Bad Cats can't be beat..... |

2 X 10
I can't speak for the Bad Cat, but I have a Dr. Z Maz 18 Jr. 2 X 10 which is similar in concept (and a better value IMO). I checked out the 1 X 12, 2 X 10 & 2 X 12 versions. I found the 2 X 10 to have the best combination of overall tone, smoothness and bottom end of the 3. YMMV.

I'll be finding out
I'm having a 2X10 cab built for a '68 Bassman head. I already have a couple of 1X12 combos, a SFDR and a Mesa Son of Boogie. I'm hoping for a cross between a super and a vibrolux sans reverb. I'll post a review when it's done.

Bad Cat Cub II
Those Bad Cat Cub II's are great sounding amps, the overdrive is fantastic. I've played through the 2X10 version and loved it. I really like the high end response that 10's can give you. A 2X10 combo will move more air and sound bigger, it would be my preference if the choice were mine. Either way you go you'll be getting a great amp. Cheers.
