TR question on ext.cabs

just wondering. when an extension cab is hooked up to a TR (ok..not crazy (well...maybe i am) not trying to make it louder, just add a dimension) does it negate the cabinet speakers and just feed the cab or are all speakers active. i was thinking of putting some speakers in the old TR cab i have and make it an open back extension. it won't be pretty....but i don't care. i'm thinking about the sound. i was thinking of putting a couple of red fangs in there, but if all 100 watts is going to the extension. that will be too much load for the speakers and even though i don't play loud i'm sure its probably not good for the speakers.
i could then use the extension cab for the TR and the champ.

If you leave the cab speakers plugged into the main spkr out jack and run the ext cab out of the ext spkr jack, then both cabs are functioning.
I am not familiar with the wattage of those speakers, but I generally like to have 25% more handling capacity than the amp produces. In the scenario you are wondering about, imo it is advisable to have speakers of similar wattage and efficiency, also. It would be interesting to mix-and-match the speakers...that is, have one of each type of speaker in each cab. The cabs would then have similar sonics. If you put the two Red Fangs in one cab and separated the cabs, you will not have a matched image on each side. One Fang and one original speaker in each cab would yield a better result, imo.

Sman...

...all the speakers will be calculated into the total impedance. I don't recommend plugging in an extra cab with the two speakers in the twin still plugged in. Your total impedance for the OT will drop-thus running your OT hotter and potentially running to cook level.

Get a Weber Z-Matcher if you want to still use the Twin cab's speakers in addition to the external cab-it will make the load balance and keep your amp cool.

BTW, what does 72202 stand for? If that's July 22 that's my birthday. Glad to know someone's using it for a tag name! 8)

72202 is my zip code back home

i use sandman as my id everywhere....by using my zip code i usually have no problem making sure its not taken

as to the amp.. i love the way it sounds but i wanted to try to find some of the sound i hear through the alnico's in my champ. the red fangs have good reviews and are cost effective. i have a couple of 2x12 cabinets i was thinking of trying them in, one open back, the other closed. the handling power was the issue with the red fangs. they are 30 watts not near enough by themselves unless in a 4x12. if the power were spread between the normal speakers and the ext cab i thought it might work

and a pre happy birthday leo

I agree that the optimum situation is to match the OT with the 4 ohm. Most players seem to agree that a 100% mismatch to the low side is not harmful to Fender OT's, excluding the Champ/Vibrochamp/Bronco amps. Some even hold that a 2 ohm load on your TR wold be less of a strain on the OT.
There is a greater danger in mismatching to the high side as there is more likelihood of flyback burning through the insulation os the winding on the OT.
Some other amps...vintage Marshall's for example...do not tolerate mismatches well at all.
As for the red fangs, I would not sugest that route. If you are set on trying some Alnico's. take a look at WEber VST's high power Alnicos....California, Michigan, Chicago.
