wet/dry/wet opinions?

I posted this over on 18watt.com but not much help yet, so....

If any of you do it,,HOW do you do it?

For now, its guitar through a few pedals (non-time based) into my ceriatone 18 watt head, out through a MASS to a 2x12 cab. The line out of the MASS goes back to the pedal board to a Boss Gigadelay then to a Traynor ycv40wr with an extension 1x12 cab for a mono w/d/w setup.

It sounds good and big but I feel the traynor is adding its own tube flavour even at modest (wet level) volumes. BTW, this is a great SRV sound if you dig that.

I'm thinking a modest EJ type,,mic-mixer (powered)-monitors might be a little more transparent. The problem is I have no way to test before plunking down at least $800 for a basic setup.

I'm sure miking is the better way to go but is it that much better?

This is something I'm experimenting with:

Guitar > loop pedal > send > "Distortion" amp (in this case a Mesa Studio .22+ but at some point a tweed Deluxe or other small amp) > Shure SM57 > Furman PQ-3 EQ > return jack of loop pedal > out jack of Loop pedal > Rivera S-120 Stereo Chorus amp with Ibanez DM-2000 delay or ART Multiverb Alpha in the loop.

This way, the amp is mic'ed, and processed through the Rivera and the effects. I can take the "distortion amp" totally out of the circuit and just play through the Rivera with or without effects.

This was inspired by Don Felder who used to mic a Tweed Deluxe running the mic into a graphic EQ, an Alembic preamp, a Crown DC-300 power amp into a 2 X 15" Alembic cab with JBL's. That way he could play stadiums and set the tone with his Deluxe, but make it loud enough for anyone to hear.

Thats an interesting rig you have there. I think though I rather favour the setup of your inspiration Don Felder. What you hear with the miked tweed is exactly what you get assuming his power amp was solid state. Next thought,,PA speakers or guitar cabs after the power amp?? Hummm...lots to consider.

Just remember that tube flavour is a good thing as most digital stuff is not that warm anyway. Eric Johnson uses power tube distortion for his sound and this is perhaps why he switched as those marshalls get very dark and round cranked up, on a cleaner rig its not a problem. He ran his delay into the front end for years though before that.
Perhaps try an acoustic/keyboard amp (carrying mini PA is a pain) with a full range speaker system and see if you prefer it, keeping in mind that the line out of the Mass will be coloured. With a guitar cab it might be fine but with a full range setup you will get clearer highs etc.

I guess it wasn't clear in my first post. That glorious, sweet, heavenly tube gain of the 18 watt is what I want to preserve. I just want to wet it up a bit in the most transparent way. I like the look of EJ's miked cab to mixer to powered (JBL Eon) monitors.
