crpooers tone on soul man

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a blues brothers dvd tat has some of their songs on it. Best of the blues brothers. Steves tone has always been 1 of my favorites. He is playing a fender amp but I have no idea which 1. It looks to have a single speaker in it. Anybody know which model it is he plays? Going to try and make to memphis in the mud this weekend to catch booker t and the mg's. Maybe I can get close enough to see for my self. Hope he plays his tele and not that cort thing.

I think

90% sure that

That tone is a Tele into a Fender Harvard.
Princeton will get you close...

There's a few videos of the MGs on Youtube. Depending on the venue, you see Cropper playing Fenders and Marshalls. Still sounds like Cropper.

I'd love to know myself for sure.

Steve is one of my all time favorites in guitar sound... John Fogerty too.

It's like no matter what they use, it ALWAYS sounds like them. Real old school American sounding, always... like Apple Pie.

What he used live, and what he used in the studio are not necessarily the same thing.

This has been discussed before. He used a Fender tweed Harvard on the early recordings. Later on he has used a red knob Twin, among others, I think.

Real fat strings, middle position or bridge with the tone cut.

cropper

I should not post after a few beers (crppoer). Anyhow reading thru those old posts reminds me of an article I read last year in GP mag on Keith Richards. He said something like when he gets ready to record he listened to lots of guitars players because all you can really do is embellish on somebody else's stuff. Thats all were doing!

It's the groove

My band plays that song and I've used at various times a Tele, an LP, or a Strat through a Deluxe Reverb, Vibrolux Reverb, or Allen Hot Fudge w/Nuts.
Just set your amp fairly clean and play to the groove, just a fraction of a frog hair behind the beat, and you'll be there.
