JBL E-120 16ohms

I came across two of these for free but I'm not sure what I have. Are they any good? The 16ohms is a little odd, are these guitar speakers and how would I wire them to work? I have a few amps but all the speakers are 8ohms.

You can wire them in parallel for 8 ohms.

Hi Craig

I like them, they should be good for guitar. My favourite speakers are the K-120's, and I believe the E series cones/VC's are used to recone the older K series speakers. If you wire them in parallell, you will have 8 ohms. If you wish to sell them, I might be interested. They would be great in a Twin or similar. If you don't want to mess with 'em, PM me.

JBLs

You have some great speakers there. Getting them for free just adds to the whole thing. If you were to sell them on eBay, you probably could get some decent $$. But you might want to try them first, because they're excellent speakers.

From what I remember, JBL created the D-130 series that sounded great with guitars, but the voice coil tolerences were too tight for guitar application. They widened the gap a bit and created the D-130F ("F" for Fender) and made a superb guitar speaker. They also did the D-120F and a coouple other variations. The next iteration of the speaker was the K series which used many of the guitar speaker specs. Then came the latest (I think) version, the E series. (I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong on some of this stuff.)

I've used JBLs in a few different amps, the latest being a D-120F in a Savage Macht 6, and I think they are among the best speakers out there.

Have fun with your new toys!

Dean

The E series speakers are now discontinued. They are electrically the same as the K series, but much heavier, due to the K series having AlNiCo magnet, and the E series uses ceramic.

A little piece of trivia, the "F" speaker line was designed because Dick Dale kept blowing up the D-130's... JBL didn't even want to get involved with guitar speakers, as they considered it "inferior", but they are my absolute favorites.
