Don't judge a book....
The 100w versions yes, did sound like ass on account of the clipping diodes used in the input stage. The 50w version on the other hand sounds quite good IMO. As for unreliability, I have known a few local punk groups who beat the living crap out of theirs and have no issues. Depending on the price it isn't a bad amp at all.

Had some 50w JCM 900 amps, never let me down. Wouldn't say they were the best sounding amps in the world but certainly not the worst. The Dual Reverbs were really versatile. I guess you could say they are a solid choice but nothing remarkable. The JCM 800 was a MUCH better amp but not as versatile.

If I recall the JCM has layered boards which means if it ever needs to go in for repairs be prepared to spend some bucks.

My JCM2000 TSL60 has a tiered PCB like that too. It's a pain to fix. The JCM800s are really nice (depending on year). The later two channel 50watts were very BAD for sure, but the other ones I've own were great (earlier or basic one channel models). The reverbs seem to suck universally on every Marshall I've owned (worse than lame digital reverb pedals, and that was out of the spring units the Marshall all had). |
