I'm a fan of tens, even though I have four 1 X 12" amps. I think tens give a little more sparkle and a little more depth. I'm saving up for a 3 X 10" combo cab for a Bandmaster Reverb. I think multiple 10's are a rich full sound. Give it a try.

Re: Speakers, 2-10's or 1-12?

The particular 12s I use seem to have a 'bigger warmer' tone that sort of 'blooms' while the 10s seem to have more 'punch' and a quicker decay. For jazz standards where I am playing clean and only using amp reverb, I prefer the sound of the 12s. If I was playing fusion or rock and/or using effects, I would be more inclined to the 10s. However there are 12s and 12s and there are 10s and 10s.

If you're having the amp built for you, have it built as a head. That way you can try out both a 1x12 and a 2x10 cabinet and see which sounds better to your ears. I like the 1x12 myself, but all that matters is what sounds good to you.

OR try this
One 12" and one 10" speaker, I built a Bandmaster Reverb chassis into a combo amp with this combination, best of both worlds IMHO.
I used some of the Eminence Alnico magnet speakers. Wish I still had that amp! |
