Thanks to all

Some great and informative replies here and for that I am very grateful. I was never going to get rid of the Twin, it is in such pristine condition it could be termed as N.O.S. It really is that good.
Anyway, I have overcome my problem by now using a Boss OD-3 modded to remove D6 and D7 diodes. This gives me the option of super clean or exactly the sound I wanted. I now really do have the best of both worlds.
Thanks again guys, you are the best !!
John

Here's what I do to make My Twin Reverb a little bit more "civilized". I use smaller, lower wattage speakers thru the extension cab output. I would suggest something like a single 12" Celestion Seventy 80 (that's still a pretty balsey speaker but you can go much smaller if you want it to sound good much quieter) . This is runs parallel to the concept Jakedog was saying about giving a small amp a bigger mouth. But you can go the other way too--give a big amp a smaller mouth (This is also a VERY inexpensive way to go and IMHO well worth checking into) . While I'm on the subject, I have even plugged home stereo speakers into my amp and Mic-ed them for recording with some FANTASTIC rusults
