Do any other amp companies

make a amp with a switch like the Carvin Vintage 16, which drops it from 16 wts to 5. I like the idea, and am wondering if there are any other options?

Sure...

Divided by 13 makes the SJT 10/20 and the JRT 9/15 which switch b/t 10 - 20 or 9 - 15 watts respectively.

I think all the Maven Peal amps have that switch...ie, the Ganesha goes from 1 watt to 100, Double Zeeta 1-44 watts

Reverend Kingsnake 10/60, Goblin 5/15, Hellhound 40/60

etc...

In Enlgish please. I'm a rookie when it comes to tube amps.

Carr

Check out the Carr Mercury. "Our exclusive power attenuating circuit enables the Mercury to be played at 8, 2, 1/2 and only 1/10 watts, with no appreciable change in tone, yet the Mercury easily yields enough clean headroom for club work." Sounds like what you're looking for.

It's easier than it looks. For example, my Reverend Kingsnake 20/60 has a switch on the back that will run the amp at either 20 watts or 60 watts. The very sort of feature you're asking about.

There Are Many

amp manufacturers that have the options you are speaking of. In addition to those listed above:

Alesandro Working Dog Amps 10 to 20 watt and 20 to 40 watt variable (via a potentiometer- i.e. a knob)

Music Man- several models have half power switches

Mesa Boogie- several models have variable power switches and also power tube switching (I think the Nomad has both 6L6 and EL84 type power tubes you can switch between. This changes power output and tone.

THD make a Univalve and Bivalve amp that you can change power tubes without re-biasing and thus change power / wattage / tone, although you have to change the tubes themselves. They also feature a built in attenuator which in effect limits power to the speakers.

To name a few...

I'd point out also that the Reverend Kingsnake and Goblin do this at about 1/2 or 1/3 the cost (or more) some/most of the other named amps.

Too bad Rev. got out of the amp biz -- but there's always eBay.

(full disclosure: owner of Goblin and lovin' it).

Yeah, the Reverend Kingsnake is 20-60 NOT 10-60 but you got my point.

There are a lot of choices for wattage switch amps out there...you just have to look around. Asking around here is a good start.

There is also the option of getting an attenuator like the Weber Mass or the THD Hotplate which help you control the volume of a higher wattage amp.

I have the 100watt Weber Mass for my 60watt Ampeg V2 and it works and sounds great. My neighbors, my family and my dog appreciate it. A lot.
