Power tube recommentadions for a SFDR

My son has a 73 SFDR. What 6v6GT tubes do people in the TDPR forum use, and who do they buy them from. His amp is in nice shape, but the power tubes have been in there a while. My son bought it from a friend of mine at work. He said that it was serviced before he bought it, and he replaced the speaker shortly after he got it.

JJ from Eurotubes

Been through the same exercise a few months ago when I bought my '69 SFDR:

The JJ 6V6s have been fine.

And what a great amp! Your son is very lucky. Don't let him sell it!!

I recommend the JJ 6V6. Buy them from Bob at Eurotubes.com.

I have a '74, bought it full of NOS tubes, guy had just spent a fortune on them, sounded crap to me, distortion, farting etc. Spoke to Bob at Eurotubes, pur in Weber speaker, copper cap rectifier and retubed with JJ's - tone heaven! Clean headroom, tasty trem, reverb from the bottom of the Grand Canyon....

JJ

I hate to be a bandwagon guy, but I had a pricey set of Visseaux NOS in my SFDR that I thought sounded real good. I ended up with a set of JJ's for another amp and tried it in the DR just to see - they sounded much better. Tighter bottom end, smoother breakup, just an overall sweeter sound. I like em'

Thanks for the response. JJ seems to be a popular brand. My son will only sell the amp to me. He got a good deal on it $525, + $50 extra for an original reverb/vibrato switch. He plays a 61 Epi Century, 68 Fender Bronco, and 70's Univox Mosrite copy through it. He owns more vintage gear than me!

well...

...I installed a pair of Mazda's in my friend's DRRI and it sounded better. I just serviced another friend's 6G2 Princeton with 6V6G Marconi's and they sounded great. I personally use JAN Philips 6V6GT's in my GReverb and VChamp and they're great. Many folks DO like JJ's so I would try them first as they are really affordable. gluck.

I'd 2nd the Mazdas. I had them in a DR and they sounded great. They weren't too expensive either.

Replaced the GTs with JJs...noticable improvement.

Replaced the JJs with NOS Marconis (GEs)...noticable improvement.

Replaced the...Not! Quite happy how the amp is now.
