philisophical question clean versus crunch/distortion...

let's say you are put in a room with 2 amps.....

one amp is the best clean you could ever want to find, but the drive, distortion, crunch whatever is the most horrid....

the other amp is hammer of the gods distortion, gain whatever, but the clean is just a clankity mess

your "punishment" or "reward" is that you can only have one for the rest of your life. which one would you choose? clean or dirty?

edited: check out my modified post a couple posts down...sorry

Clean

You can always make clean go dirty (pedals), but you can never make dirty go clean.

It depends on whether you're under 30 or over 30.

let me restate my first post, everything stays the same except it has to be dirty all the time or clean all the time, no dirtying up the clean, or cleaning up the dirty....

Great post.

Could I have the option of having a clean just on the edge of break up ? :D :D :D

Seriously, if it had to be only one? Tough choic, but I'd have to say clean... (and I'm less than 30 )

the music (in the stylistic sense) each is capable of covering tilts the scale well in favor of the clean amp....

Clean

If it has a great clean sound then you can be assured a pedal in front of it will sound great too.

Since neither of those amps would be Peavey I'll pass on both. A Triple X will do both easily. So will my 5150 combo and my VTM 60. I don't have to settle.

You can choose to keep either your lungs or your kidneys.

"Vanna, I'd like to buy a vowel, please".

Depends on how well the dirty amp cleans up from the guitar. The kazoo is always a safe bet, if in doubt.

it's got a little off, but what i was basically trying to get out of this (my fault) was if you could only have a clean amp(no way possible of getting it dirty) or a dirty amp (no way of getting it clean) regardless of brand which would you choose...like i said my fault for not getting the parameters set it was an off the cuff post ...later

If I can only have one, I'd have to have me some gain.

Clean for me. It's the kind of playing I do in my old age.

clean for me too.

you can play subtle gentle clean and angry frenetic clean. i just think you have more relative-dynamic range within the parameters of clean that you do with dirt.

if you want to rock out with a clean guitar you just dig in hard and imagine the crunk. (you can play ac/dc riff son an acoustic and they still "work" right?)

but complex jazz chords or delicate harp-like fingerpicked arpegios are never going to work with a dirty sound are they? you can't imagine away that crunch.

CLEAN !!!!!
As long as I've got control over My Volume and Tone Control I'll be able to get across.
A clean Amp that "blooms" now that's what I call sweet.

Clean... if I can have a decent compressor...

Gotta have the compressor. Call it a crutch, call me weak... just gimme.

Great question! I had to read it twice to fully understand it. My first urge was to say Clean, no question.

Then I thought, well, I mean Fender blackface clean. Somebody else's idea of the "perfect" clean might be something other.

Given a choice between a nice, crunchy Marshall and the clean of a Polytone Minibrute or a Roland Jazz Chorus, I'd go with the Marshall instead.

But if I could really, really have the best blackface clean of a 40 or so watt Fender --

CLEAN all the way! To me, more dynamics, more expressive, more choices (this is assuming you won't allow cleaning up a chrunchy amp by using guitar's volume knob!).
