Steven Seagal--go figure

I saw the cover of the new Vintage Guitar features Steven Seagal's guitar collection. The man has EIGHT high power tweed Twins. As he put it, "Between me, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton we've got them all..."

What a waste. :?

Steven Seagal shouldn't be allowed one, let alone eight.

I subscribed to VG and dropped GP mainly because of ridiculous articles like the "Great Kat" spotlight. Glad to see that VG is sticking to serious artists like Steven Seagal.

Yikes!

When I think of KR, EC, I always include SS, goes without saying,...

Well, if Billy Bob Thornton can get Marty Stuart to play on his album, why not?

I dunno...

After seeing the article, I don't like Seagal any more or less than I used to. I do have respect for him as a collector who seems to know the historical signifcance of what he collects. I got no problem with a dude who has money putting it in the right place. Of course his persona shades things, but I'd guess that any of us could be scrutinized to the point of villification, movie star or not.

Point being: Hey, man, nice guitars!

I don't believe Vg was portraying Stephen as a serious artist. The focus was on the collection which is tremendous. I don't care for his movies either but nevertheless he may be a better guitarist than alot of us. And if he is that means he should not be dismissed. He's put the time and effort into it.

SS is a very complex case. I would not want to comment definitively one way or the other. I got stuck in a delay in an airport with nothing to read but a magazine someone left behind that had a really long article about him, his interests, associations, etc. I was quite taken aback and not sure what to make of it all. I will say this, he is NOT and ordinary joe. He's rubbed elbows with some very powerful people all around the world.

Seagal is an artist indeed, both martial and BS. I don't like or dislike him, but I can't take him seriously when he openly proclaims that the CIA hired him as an assassin.

Segal

Steven Segal has a home here in a suburb of Memphis, a friend of the young man who works for me got to go see Steven play at a private party here recently.
Now this guy is not a guitar player, (but maybe that makes him more objective?) at any rate he said that he enjoyed it and thought S.S. was pretty good.

I really don't care one way or another but unless you've actually heard the guy play, why diss him? why not give him the benefit of the doubt? There are plenty of collectors who really can't play at all. They do have the cash though.
All I know is S.S. has some really cool guitars, and I'd rather see someone who appreciates them for their historical value have them, than see them hanging on a wall in a Guitar Center or Hard Rock Cafe.

And as my buddy said when I showed him the VG article, maybe Segal's not the "best" guitar player around, but I bet he can beat up the "best" guitar player around

Really enjoyed the article and i actually do
get a hoot out of his movies in a campy sort
of way.
Love to hang out with him and noodle with
those guitars especially the Flying V. If it is
from the Stax days that thing must vibrate
just sittin there. If any of you have "Bad Sign"
on Stax listen to the cut "Personal Manager"
and feature owning THAT guitar.
Steven, be my friend.

the difference...

from what i read in the article, to me it seemed like he bought them for the love of playing them, not collecting them for value, you can't fault a man for that. i mean if you knew a man that has say 4 or 5 black guards for sale or your fav peice of equipment and he said "tell ya what i'm letting them go for an insanely low price that i know you can afford" would you buy them all or say no i only want one i'll let someone else have the rest. he claims to have bought the amps cause he loved the sound, so i'm assuming he's playing through them, i can see that rather than somebody putting them in a vault til they skyrocket and then selling them

I haven't read the VG article in question, but they regularly run articles on people with outstanding collections (like a recent one on novelist/psychologist Jonathan Kellerman). In a coincidence, I was talking to my guitar tech earlier in the week, and he mentioned some work he had done for Steven Seagal here in Memphis. He said that Seagal was very demanding but appreciative of good work, and paid well for services rendered. Those services included a refret and other work on a '65 Strat that Seagal had bought for over $70K. He also said that Seagal's guitar playing was actually quite good. Many people have multiple talents, and some of them have the money to showcase those talents.

I must add that I find SS's movies to be delightful popcorn fare, and I'm happy to see great guitars in the hands of someone who'll care for them and seems to appreciate them.

However, for your reading pleasure I will pass on the following anecdote:

"dude! did i tell you i actually saw him in austin vintage guitars a couple years ago? oh man, it was priceless. i walk around the corner from heart of texas toward austin vintage and see a giant limo w/ a scary looking
bodyguard, and i'm thinking oh boy, this is gonna be some famous band and i'm so outta the loop i'm not gonna know who they are. so i stroll in and
it's him w/ a tiny and deadly looking japanese chick. he was wearing this hilarious long-sleeve japanese kimono-like orange shirt that had no effect whatsoever in cover his HUGE gut! the guy asks him what he's looking for
and he mentions he's specifically looking for a '54 tele. he started talking about how sweet albert collins' '57 tele sounds (he owns it) --talking like he's stevie ray vaughan or something. i suspect he had a tele
for every year except '54 and that's why he was looking for one. the whole thing was very comical."

those of us who play and love the gear tend to collect within(and well sometimes outside) of our means..Segal obviously has the means to put together a killer collection , he plays and digs it ..nuff said , next thing you'll be mocking Gary Busey for owning Buddy Holly's strat ...lol 6S9L
